What I'd like to see...

* Piano Roll highlighting to show key/mode - currently you can only see C Major. I'd like to see the piano roll reflect E major or E minor or D Dorian (heh!) with the 'gray' notes. I'm a beginner, I can't remember these things!

What I'd really like to see:
- The capability of having multiple channels visible in the Piano Roll at the same time. Its tedious having to swap from one channel to another without being able to see them all together. This way, you can see all the notes at the same time which would really help in being able to see how a pattern fits into a whole song and how the notes from one pattern relate to the notes in the other patterns. This would move FLS away from being seen as just a pattern-based sequencer, and towards being a fully-fledged compositional tool.

- Make use of right-clicking in the Piano Roll (and elsewhere) for bringing up menu items, particularly changing editing tools as this saves having to return to the top-left of the PR in order to change tools each time.

Judging from the hosts I'm familiar with, FL has the most elegant and quickest piano roll to work with. A big part of it is being able to do all the basic stuff without switching tools, thanks to the way left and right click plus modifier keys work. So much better than the way most hosts do it, constant switching between tools (Live is very annoying in this regard, though I've only dabbled with it - but haven't found a way to draw, erase and move notes without that annoying CTRL+B all the time)... if there's one thing that shouldn't be changed in FL it's the way piano roll works. Switch tools with shortcuts instead, that's also done well, with single shortcuts instead of obligatory modifier keys (CTRL, SHIFT, ALT) combined with something, which rocks...

I've been fiddling with FL and Live (and a couple more hosts) for a while now (hell, I've had FL demos on my machine for ages, about from the time I purchased my main host which I'm now giving up on!), trying to decide which host to switch into from my current toolset, and it's things like these that make FL stand out from the crowd.

Regarding someone else's wish to be able to switch VSTis into internal generators... open the VSTi in question, that little folder icon lets you substitute the current one with one of your choice - rather nifty IMHO.

And... someone mentioned a wish for being able to save bundles of channel, instrument, fx etc. settings - doesn't 'Export - project bones' do just that?

I'm holding off my choice until FL6 is out, but right now, for me the choice is between FL and Live, and in overall ease of use FL is the king. Live has its own strong features, but apart from how you can alter samplebased stuff in it, those features aren't that important to me - how quickly and easily I can write things down that are playing in my head, in FL, is impressive. And everything that comes with FL6 seem to be making it even more impressive In the mean time, I get more and more amazed every time I find some new small timesaving feature, there's a million little things I've found thanks to people discussing FL in here, despite the preference to do that on their own forums

Mate, you're a legend!! Thats exactly what I meant!! Gee, I'm gonna have to go back and read my copy of the FL studio Bible again - I missed that the first time around!

...and if that wasn't enough, you were spot on with how to change tools using the keyboard as well!! I just had a look over the keyboard shortcuts list, and sure enough, there they were...

Yeah, you're not the only person who has said FL's piano roll is actually very good to work with. I probably need to spend more time with it and really get to know it.

I'm so pleased that events are going to be editable in the Piano roll. Editing in a seperate window and constantly checking what bar number you were at to correlate the 2 windows was a nightmare. Nice to see this sort of thing being streamlined.

Oh if you look down some of the suggested wanted features are going to be there in the next version, but that's nothing like the huge amount of requested features in this thread that it turns out are there already. That's funny me thinks : )

here's one: ZIP channels in each pattern differently. Right now, i break down into several channel groups, that does help. However, it would be even more help if it were possible to zip unused channels in each pattern. Not exactly something that I am disatisfied with, but definately something that can help w/ screen real estate / possible CPU (no shown activity for zipped channels)

What's wrong with the 'Auto zip empty channels' function (General settings) ?

I could be wrong, but it unzips unuzed channels in the song - not in a pattern. So when you go to the next pattern, the same selection is zipped.

fhangor, you CAN distinguish between VST instruments and effects in the list. when you refresh, choose the bottom option (don't remember what it is exactly, and i'm at work). it'll take a little bit longer, but it's worth it.

Just choose "Scan and verify" as opposed to "Fast scan".
