Hi all,

My wife and I are thinking of moving to the UK, and finding a nice place for ourselves :D . I plan on creating in this new place a little project studio for myself, a one-room thing (not for recording bands or ensembles etc., but basically a studio, focused mainly (but not exclusively) on MIDI, consisting of a fantastic MIDI master keyboard, a state-of-the-art PC, loads of incredible software, a terrific A/D-D/A converter, a magnificent power amp, some l33t monitors, and a few awesome mics. Superb lighting, a cool desk, a comfortable chair, and a few exotic plants would give the finishing touch.

I want this room to sound *neutral*. I don't want a room that is "good for orchestral music", or "good for rock", or something like that. I want it couloring my sound as little as possible (so that also involves getting the best monitors my money can buy).

Since my brother is a very experienced building constructor, mainly involved with interiors, he will prolly be the one helping me build it, but he has little of no knowledge of acoustics.

My question is: what are the software tools of choice to design rooms from an acoustical standpoint? I need software, in which I can specify the exact shape and size of the room, the materials the walls will be made of, and as a result I would like to see frequency (and phase?) responses on various listening positions, and hopefully it could deliver impulse responses too, so I actually hear the room before it even exists. :phones:

It doesn't matter too much whether the software is slow: I have a reasonably fast PC with enough RAM, and some time (months) left before this all starts. But of course, faster is always better... But *accuracy* is vital!

I know the Voxengo thing, but if I'm not mistaken, that's 2D, and not really a room designer.

And it can not be *too* expensive, because money is a bit of a problem right now.

Any ideas? :help:

Thanx a million!!!

Heeb.

Edit: it should be Windows based (I have XP pro), 'cause Mac/Linux ain't my thing.

Have you tried the gearslutz forum? I recon you might have a better chance of finding someone who might know of such software, or simply someone who give you some tips as to what you should definitely keep in mind designing your room with off the shelf interior design software.
The voxengo impulse modeler is something else btw, it's there to let you construct impulse files to use with the pristine space convolution reverb plugin.

best, good luck!

I dont know about software, but you could get in touch with these guys for advice. The guy behind it has been doing studio design for years.

They interviewed him back in '99.

There's also some DIY type info at Sound On Sound

Wow! Some excellent tips, thanx!

Only this one is not about sound:

I know that, but you have to admit there are parallels here: I guess a good and professional room designer package should be able to deliver an impulse response file, which you can then use to listen to the room acoustics before it is built. Both are about ray tracing, sound source & listener positions, wall materials, etc.
