i would lik eto turn off (..and not just hide) the windows shell/tasbar, is there any way to do it? or i have to install any other software/shell? ..do you know if konfabulator can do this?

Uhm...you want to hide what? The graphical interface or just the taskbar? You can switch on auto hide for the taskbar in Win XP. To get rid of the GUI, install Linux.

yes you can. There are things like Geoshell that you can run minimal shell features. I ran that for a while, and found it to be overrated. for some reason our firewall blocks the site, but www.geoshell.com should fill ya in.

I tested LiteStep for a while, and it was nice. Some of the themes I tried were pretty buggy, though- it's a pain to troubleshoot a crashing shell without deleting the whole user. The ones that weren't buggy were pretty nice.
I'm thinking about litestepping my Shuttle, make it really flashy and stuff.

I had it turned off by accident once (the program itself had ended while windows itself was still live) and I'll tell you it's bloody annoying since you can't get anything done.

But if this is what you want indeed (some form of security, only access to the desktop) ... Hell, can't find it

There's plenty of alternative shells, the thing to remember though is *FIRST* reading what they might do to your system and what to do in case of any problems (most of them just replace a registry entry that define the shell in use)...

Tried most of them, ran each one I tried for weeks to find out all the quirks and problems. I'd recommend something like SharpE from the more 'minimalistic' ones and LiteStep from the featurefilled ones - the latter exist in several nice preconfigured distributions such as LDE(X).

The one I've been using for a long time now is BlackBox for Windows, bbLean to be exact. Takes some tweaking via a bunch of text files to customize it to your liking, and some user effort in trying out for example which of the taskbar replacements is the one for you... and about the only real issue I have with it is disappearing systray icons, but every single shell replacement has issues with systray anyways

I don't run bbLean as a shell replacement though, I boot into ordinary Windows first, then launch bbLean - just in case something might happen. So far hasn't, bbLean has been in regular use for about two years now.
