I just bough the new stones cd, when i put the cd in my computer it has its own browser which only alows me to import in WMA format... and the songs are liscense protected. I usually use iTunes to listen to music, but iTunes can't play WMA, and the protection is preventing file format conversions, errrrr. I'd like to just import the songs in the the apple format, which i'm sure is possible if the little browser that gets launched detects a mac os instead of windows. It there any way to trick this cd into thinking i've got mac or convert these damn file to anything else but WMA...

i read this and remembered your post (took a bit to find it!)

from PC World: "Sony BMG's copy-protected CDs incoporate First 4 Internet'sXCP2 copy protection...When you the CD into your Windows-cased computer, the disc launches its own audio player software, which warns you that you'll be alllowed to make only three copies of the disc. You can make those copies from whitin the Sony BMG audio player, or you can use that software to rip the files to your music library. (For this purpose you must use a player that suppoorts Window Media Audio files...blah blah...but not Apple's ITunes.)

The copy protections are not iron-clad, however: You can make three copies of the CD on each PC on which you load it. You can also make three additional copies of the CD from the tracks that you have ripped to your Windows Media Player library. Once you have burned CDs using Windows Media Player, the tracks cease to be protected, and you can upload this audio CD into another player, such as ITunes. And once the tracks are uploaded, you can burn them as often as you like......blah blah about ipods.....If youinquire, thogh, Sony BMG will email you a workaround."

the blah blah ipod stuff said that it's because Apple won't license it's FairPlay technology to other companies that you can't use ITunes, not Windows....

(sorry for any typos)
hope this helps,

So the cd's are protected, making it a pain for legit owners with ipods to access the tunes, but once you know what u r doing u can rip & convert anyway & remove the protection etc.

The article is called "Copyright Crackdown" in the Sept. issue of PC World (i don't want to type the whole thing...i hate typing! probably illegal to boot..)

but one more excerpt: "Our goal is to create a series of speed bumps that make it clear to users that there are limits [to copying]" says Thomas Hesse, president of Sony BMG' Global Digital Business Group. "If you attempt to burn 20 copies and distribute them to all of your friends, that's not appropriate."
