He comes! He sees! He reviews!

You guessed it, it's another batch of reviews!

Emoogation - Wopelka:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another wonderfully weird one, this. It never ceases to amaze me how broad the music spectrum of this forum ranges. The electronic beats and blips are cool, even though the vocals creep me out sometimes. Still, it's very enjoyable and it for some reason reminds me of a lullaby for computers...

Moog In Brogues - Glassback:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, this reminds me of Jarre... great, wonderful track! Top notch sounds. The voice samples are great even if I think that the first part (before the voice samples start) is definetely my favourite part as it builds very nicely. Great track!

I don't know - Sttjelle
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ever since starting to listen to synth music with Jarre I've got a soft spot for music that starts out with wind-like noise... This is a really well produced track. Great sounds, nice chords, interesting vocoding fx and a superb mix. If I would have to pick one thing to criticize it's that at some moments such as around 02:00 there's not that much happening and some synth fx here and there could maybe have livened it up. But to be honest I don't care that much about that - this is a wonderful track!

Here we go! More reviews...

Remember, if you think I'm wrong, you're probably right.

Sepheritoh Shadows In Our Minds
For me this song is divided into two pieces; the guitar and the rest. I like the instrumentation and ideas, specially when it comes more epic, but I don´t like the guitar parts. I'm sorry, surely question of likings.

Thomekk Bob Has Gone
Sometimes I look at life kinda tragedy movie and imagine music like this song while passing the credits explaining it all was but a big joke. In a sense like "All That Jazz"

Oddbods Finger Music For The Computer Age
Good intro, more Jarre than Vangelis. Very well instrumented. I like but if it was more epic than poppy I would like more. Good song anyway

Voynich The Release
LINK NOT WORKING!!!!!

Caco Moogie Wonderland
I like the bass line and the odd percussion over. As passing the song I feel like is too static. Pehaps one or two changes in the base could help keep me hanging. Lower frecuencies too dominant IMO, of course.

Bob's Funky Friday - Kovacs:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I really love the cool bass playing in this one. The lead synth is cool too but a tad too bright for my liking. The rhythms are very nice. I do like the soloing that develops after 01:40 where some prog rock elements creep in. If I had to make a criticism it's just that the backing structure more or less stays the same throughout and could maybe have done with a break or two. And I'm never much of a fan of fade outs. Still, this is a very cool track!

Reviews (part III)
Good batch of entries this one…

Stjelle – I do like the almost 'Euro-pop' feel to this. The vocoded stuff a bit more distinct maybe? Great track though.
A touch of TelePopMusik about it.

Glassback – Dark stuff (I don’t mean Guinness) and I like the drums. I seem to be more in a pop mood at the moment.

Wolpeka – rather odd with that close up miked vocal improv but it all fits together to make an original track.

Kovacs – got some good energy this track. The (synced?) lead becomes a bit fatiguing on the old lugholes after a while though. Bit of variation possibly..i.e. switching to another sound in the middle

Post

Marc JX8P - Like your wind effects too. Airy sounds could be very nice as long as they dont get to sharp/ sizzling sounding. I think you've managed here. Nice chords and progression. You've selected a set of sounds (probably lots of moog stuff) I basically think is a bit dry and a little bit uninteresting. Heh, I know the theme here and you're probably very correct in following that. I miss a bit more arrangement, more instruments playing. But I guess thats only me as I quite often over-arrange my music. On the other hand, some say 'less is more'.

Oddbods finger - A track also following the theme very nicely. I like vocoding stuff and your voices sound good. A bit the same as above, some of the sounds is for me a bit too simple and lack maybe of some dynamic. But I guess I'm only very fastidious when selecting sounds I think are good.

Thanks for the review, sttjelle! I did experiment with more - drums for example - but it didn't seem to work and in the end I decided to let it be. I got a bit of a soft spot for the sounds used - they're not from a Moog synth as I didn't have access to one, but mostly from my old Roland JX8P (I wanted to at least use an analog synth, even if it wasn't a Moog one) and I programmed them years and years ago. It was really fun using them again (and for the first time on a multi-tracked basis). I may revisit this one later on though and keep your advise about the arrangement in mind. Maybe I'll lengthen it and that would give more room for complexity.

...More coming!
Bit buried about disclaimer sentence so it would be just in spirit 8)

Farlukar Fooger
Good intro in odd signature. The instruments make a nice background to voice. After the bass takes the lead rol very well. I like the slowly falling synths. Good song

Respirator Moog Has Left The Building
I like the ambient this song starts. There's subtle variation all along. Subtle indeed. Lets me with the feel of a good bridge, so I would like to hear in a biggest context

AndreasE Moog Meets Emerson
This song lets me a bit offside. The instrumentation suggests me a quite more defined harmonic structure (like Lucky Man as you referenced) but I like the way it is. It's a pity you're not a guitarist, because your vision of what to do is very good  . As a curiosity; I can see perfectly the waveforms of the lead in the visualization of W. Media Player :o

Petrudamsa Requiem for Bob Moog
Stop motors! A real piano player :-o . Very good all. Less is more so, Chapeau! :phones:

Reviews [Part IV]

Griels – this is quite unlike any BoC I’ve ever heard :? (unless you've had a preview of the new album and they've gone all funky jazz-rock) The upright bass at the start sounds great…so does Mr Tramp.

Mystahr – now the opening drone note of this really does sound like the start of a BoC track. Nice if you like a bit of minimilist ambient

emdot_ambient – don’t know the original of this…not that keen on the composition…a sort of 12 bar blues for synths I guess, but it sounds great.

A Slice of Moog - Griels:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Wow, this is a great track - I love how you blend the vocals and the sound fx/music, especially in the first minute. Great rhythms after that and I love the soloing. Very nice! On a side note - I'm also impressed how you managed to make a track of exactly 04:00!

Dear Mr R. Moog - mystahr:

I really like the sounds and the patterns you use, my only problem with this track is that there just isn't happening enough in it for me.

Cybernaut - Emdot_Ambient:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Oh yes, vintage synth music! Very enjoyable, nice use of the legato effect. Great sounds... Pity about the fade out.

Reviews Reviews Rrrreviews...
First of all:
It's sort of difficult to review spacish tunes for me, I'll try though (no excuse, hey).

1. Hovmod - In a blue Moog(3:45)
Has a sort of a impro/ intro character to me. Soundcheck in space? The aliens are going to play their gig and act very careful/sensitive.

2. Griels - Moog Thang (2:19)
Good Space-Groove one. Oh and has melodies/harmonic structure. makes it easier to follow. The aliens are dancing, the space-party is taking place, all are quiet happy. Could also have been named "Moogroove"

3. Petru Delu Damsa - Requiem for Bob Moog (3:48)
Wow, sounds like the seventies, the beginning started the expectation that it could go in trnce direction. Wrong! Nice Fusion-sound. Yeah it appears like some movie score from a 70s film.

4. Caco - Moogie Wonderland (2:57)
Has a good dark/wavish athmosphere right from the start! Yeah, it's a bit too static! But I like it.

5. mystahr - Dear Mr R. Moog (3:59)
Difficult to talk about this. To me it takes too long to come to some development, sorry. Not my sort of coffee.

6. Patrick9 - In the Moog(3:28)
Hahaha, seems to me you and me are the only blasphemics who dared to do soemthing funny. Very funny interpretation, like a good audio-comic.
And it's so pleasantly distuned. Great!

7. Wopelka - Emoogation (3:24)
Dear Mr. Moog, see what I'm doing with your toys. I feel you, do you feel it to? I'm near to you and I'm grown up child. Thank you for the toys! I feel the Wopelka-spirit in this too going the heterogenious way, why can't you do something completely boring, man?

8. Andreas Ehrhardt - Moog meets Emerson (1:57)
Like the intimacy and the minimalism of the arrangement! It's intensive, goood! And the mix is good, too.

9. Sepheritoh - Shadows in our minds (3:37)
Think that the guitar(s) are out of timing only needs a little time to get used to it. Sounds like an outro of an epic story! Probably Moog's
8)
10. Thomekk - Bob has gone (2:35)
O shit. What's that stupid? Really a damned joke.

11. sttjelle - I don't know (3:43)
Nice ambient trance music. Though I would have loved more to hear the vocals without the damned vocoder. But, sure, it's the genre, it's the style- and it fits to it well.

12. Marc JX8P - The Great Modular In The Sky (2:30)
Very filmish! Keeps a good tension over 2:30. Compliment!

13. Benedict Roff-Marsh - Time Returns All Legends To Glory (2:42)
Another fine ambient one. I hear a little bit Jarre here. Btw. I like your idea of using only synths without outside fx!

14. Emdot Ambient - Cybernaut (3:00)
A bluesy night in Cybernesia. A little bit too static for me though. Ok I hear at 1:56 you transposed it, but from there I would have wished there would something more happen to the whole arrangement.

15. Ezy Ryder - And then there was Moog (2:19)
This has a song structure. Could imagine some small choir-voices here and there to spice it up!

16. Khepira - Spirals for an Inventor (2:21)
Another alien dancefloora. Aliens are more quiet and sensitive in comparism to gabba-humans, that's good. Sometimes they get a bit lost in space. But - hey, that's what they like!

17. Kovacs - Bob's Funky Friday (3:54)
Yeah, the lead is a bit too upfront in the mix (maybe because it's a moog and we're having this contest!) The mix is strange. In the background there's a virtual band working, the soloist seems not to react too much what the backists are playing, so they do a brave slave job. This piece cold be worked out to a good dance tune for sure. But maybe that was not your intention. Peace.

18. mchlwlsn - AllegroAssai (3:28)
Don't have much to say. But for sure it fits to some Emerson/Tomita/Jon Lordish idioms - yesterday in the 70s when there so many rock meets classics works done.

19. Max el Belga (poepe) - Bob has left the building... (3:42)
You have you're own style, though it's the 2nd tune I only know right now. Good production! Another one who likes to build it eclectical.
Poepe, Do u stuff with singers? You should! Cos there's so much compositorical agitation..

20. Respirator - Moog Has Left the Building (4:00)
Mr. M lies down @ some space hospital. Whew! What's going to happen next? O, THAT'S the way it looks in the twilight zone after death! Cool, I'm glad that I not hear my own creatures as my final surround. What's going to happen next?

21. k - 0509 Scoops TheTelephoneCall (2:37)
Who's Tee-Bo(ne)? Probably here are some special reminiscences thrown in I don't know. The development of the vocoder, the ring modulator? I think this has to be heard more often to get all the fine things packed in here.

22. Silent Mind - KvRBullshit (2:31)
Focking Bollschit! What has it to do with the legacy of the beloved mastermind? You are trancy guy, hey. So u don't give a foog!!? And so do I! Foog yoo(g)! (don't take these words too serious please)

23. Voynich (www.voynich.co.uk) - The Release (KVR Edit) (3:52)
Tristessy requiem. In the 80s the sampling technology took over. Here we present you: The moog sound! I can only interpretate it as a collage, and it's quiet ok. Something to hear more than once.

24. Barnadine - Flown (2:51)
The small build in dissonance is nice! And you don't know Robert Wyatt? It's so intimate, he does similar things but of course different than you. Very good minimalism!

25. Diek - The Call of the Universe (3:02)
Fine chord-progressions! The title captures it quiet well. I see outside of the world like in Kubrick's "2001". You make the hearer a camera and direct the camera's moves and let pleasantly open which way minds will wander besides the camera-direction.

26. Farlukar - Fooger (3:10)
At the alien-party again: Nearly any cosmic drugs are left over but the dance is still going on. The solo-mooger star still has fun doing his robotic soloing. Sometimes he listens to this strange conserved human voice. Burp!

27. Glassback - Moog In Brogues (3:14)
Hey, why not move the party to another planet? Boooh! All robots are a bit lazy, though they still dance. Not enough energy to transcend or to beam over. Deep deep night in space. Still on drugs but no hi energy ones.

29. 0509-knockman-the moog kookbook.mp3
It's the second song I hear from you (first was last month's contribution) . Now something comes to mind. Do you know Scott Walker? You remind me of him! Besides this is a very good tune! Like this one a lot!

30. OddbodsFinger-Music For Computer.mp3
KRAFTmoogWERK! Perfect production! Was Moog a computerfan? What has it to do with Bobby? Don't know. Getting to know your music. Liked your last months song so much, this one leaves me cold.

31. Scamme-Now you can rest.mp3
Here's your spacy moog-reporter from the alien-party again: All our bots here received new drugs. Now they're waiting for new instructions
from Robot Moog. Ready to take off. This tune means hope. I like it!

32. utm-europa+piratetwins.mp3
The dawn of the bots. Let's take over rocking freaking continents now! Don't know the original, but this rocks! The Bots say: "Let's take some stylish human memorabilia, bring it over to the whole cosm. YEAH!

33. Beardedone MoodforBobMoog
Hi, this is Rob again. This time thanks for the nice, nice ambient groove. When I hear it here from heaven, I like it, there is hope for the whole earth. Take your responsibilities and take care, humans! I'm here...

Sorry boys and girls... I was doing the monthly listening and reviewing of the songs and then I stumbled on Petru Delu Damsa, with his "Requiem for Bob Moog"...
Now I must stop with the job, because everything seems crap to me (compaired to that piece of music)...
Maybe tomorrow I´ll find the strength to go on :hihi:

The story so far . . .

I've already done a few individual reviews. Here's the rest. I did them in whatever order they came up in my media player.

Caco -- Moogie Wonderland: Yep. Big Moogesque bass line. Nice beat. Nice perc sounds. The whole mix is a little awash in reverb, kind of muddying things as if this were performed in a big cave. Nice change ups and variations on a simple theme. Overall pretty enjoyable.

Mystahr -- Dear Mr R. Moog: Nice moody (no pun intended) intro. If it weren't for that repetitive 4-beat sequence this would almost have a Klaus Schulze feel. Like it when the second sequence comes in. Hmm. Feels kind of like a S.E.T.I. ambient piece actually. Nice.

Wopelka -- Emoogation: I normally am really attracted to your quirky, unconventional works. They have a playfulness that's really fresh. There's a bit of that here as well, but unfortunately it seems a bit unfocused this time around.

AndreasE -- Moog Meets Emerson: It's funny. I bought a real live Minimoog from a friend from college. It's currently down with a dead power supply but this song reminds me of when its former owner used it. He smoked at the time and never cleaned the keyboard's contacts. As he played, it would do this kind of random octave shift, kind of like what you've emulated here :) Nostalgia comes in all forms, I suppose. OK, so this wasn't much of a review . . . but I didn't know what else to say!

Sepheritoh -- Shadows in our minds: I always find your works to have a certain uniqueness that isn't always present in orchestral works found here. Despite what's been said about the guitars I like this. I think you've hit a valid sentiment, and after all you did add some Moog sounds!

Thomekk -- Bob Has Gone: Hey, your guitar's out of tune! ;) You know, you could have entered this in last month's competition, sounds very psychedelic. Not what I would have chosen to do as a Moog tribute, but, hey . . . I ain't you! Nice work. Like this.

sttjelle -- I Don't Know: This is like a big synth anthemic kind of thang. Very nice. Bit o' Jarre there, a little of something else I can't quite put my finger on--like Tim Blake or some other late 70's synth kinda guy. Like the vocoded voices, though what they're saying isn't too clear. Good composition.

nikp2000 -- A Sailor On Strange Seas: Why strange seas? I wish I knew more about how people are interpretting the themes. This definitely has the Minimoog lead thing going. A bit of prog rock guitar stuff. Nice little work. Interesting that it relies on guitar and synth, sans drum track. Kind of refreshing. Almost reminds me of an odd Heldon moment. Kind of a sleeper. It grows on you.

Marc JX8P -- The Great Modular In The Sky: Obvious title, but a good one. I think it progresses into a strange area around the 1 min mark, only to head on to more conventional territory at 1:35 or so. Nice arpeggios and all that, perhaps a bit too much swirly stuff in the background at that point. And then a fairly quick fade out. Nice sound world, but I wish this went someplace with a little more meat. Some good bottom end and maybe percs. Not bad.

Ezy Ryder -- And Then There Was Moog: No, you didn't quite make the prog sound of the 70's, but you made something pretty unique. Love the intro. Sounds like this song would have needed another 4 minutes to really "happen." Never really quite gels into a real resolution . . . but I think you're onto something here.

Khepira -- Spirals for an Inventor: Another track with little explanation in the submissions page. Nice sounds, good rhythm and all but . . . why does it keep ending and starting up again? That's a little disconcerting to my ears. Makes me feel like I'm in the studio as you're working on the track, turning it on and off as you work. Doesn't quite work for me.

Kovacs -- Bob's Funky Friday: Oh, yeah. No explanation needed. Title says it all. But, yeah, you did funk this up. Although I'm not so sure the lead synth is exactly funk. Same decade, but what the hey? Fun track. Nice beats.

Scoops -- The Telephone Call: How did you come up with this? It's really clever. Not so terribly overtly funny . . . well, yeah, it's funny, but more fascinating than anything. Kudos. Really nice, ingenious bit o' work!

Silent Mind -- KvRBullshit: Way noisy, dude. Is it the over compression that makes the over reverbed background drop out with every kick drum or did you use some kind of weird ducking? Whatever the reason, it's pretty annoying in headphones. Runes a good trance tune. I really like trance sometimes. I know they get knocked about here but this one could really be nice if it were handled a little gentler. Sometimes less is more. Sometimes more is more. Unfortunately I think the former would be more here. No bullshit.

Yuskevich -- In Memoriam Doctoris Roberti: Nice first go at a competition piece. Very good intro. I think the song loses some steam about half-way through. It needed to burst into something new but just kind of kept in the same mode. Probably wouldn't have been such an issue but that white noise wind sound is mixed a bit too high and it distracts from the nice stuff going on underneath. Keep at it! Hope you keep joining us here.

Barnadine -- Flown: Nice reverent little hymn here. Gentle and well considered. Great work!

Diek -- The Call of the Universe: I mentioned this one over at the Katrina Relief thread. Wonderful track! Great mix of sounds, excellent production, sweet evolving composition with a really nice change up at the end. Sad, uplifting and contemplative. Love it!

Farlukar -- Fooger: Nice little tribute here. Excellent use of audio clips and music, both moving from background to foreground in an intelligent and effective way. Excellent sounds. Nice subdued analog drum parts. Very enjoyable.

Glassback -- Moog In Brogues: Your little ditty. Nice little ditty. Great sounds and production. Love the groove here and the incidental sounds are wonderful. That flanged hi-hat is so Trans-Europe Express, I adore it! Sweeeeeet.

Griels -- A Slice of Moog: Lovely to hear how this has come along. Dig that funky P-Funk bass line. And the bagels are back . . . yeah! Groovy, funky, delicious slice. Oh, that lead is really P-Funked too, isn't it? Like the little jazzy things thrown in. Excellent all around.

Knockman-Wildchurch -- The Moog Kook Book: You crack me up. You're like a friggin' genius, you know? Funny and touching. Can't think of a better tribute. Me 'at's off to you, mate!

Oddbods Fingers -- Music for the Computer Age: Simple and direct composition, clear precise production. I really like the vocoded vocal on this. Quite lovely.

Petru Delu Damsa -- Requiem for Bob Moog: After a rather lackluster Styx-esque piano/string/synth intro, this opens up into a fine prog rock piece ala Camel and/or Happy The Man. I was hoping someone would do this. I love that stuff, though I don't often listen to it anymore. The keyboards are awesome, though that long fast-fingered lead starting at 2:45 is too mechanical to be believable. Cut back on the quantization to add a bit of human feel to this! Also, I find the drums to be a little too far in the background, too much reliance on the same cymbal hit and have a little too much panning applied to them, which makes the production too obviously computer controlled. But an amazingly good first entry!

Scamme -- Now You Can Rest: Tablas and ethnic flute samples? Well, okay, but tablas and ethnic flute samples leading into a cheesy-ass synth lead, 4-on-the-floor, shake your booty trancy thing? This is pretty goofy.

Beardedone -- Mood for Bob Moog: Perhaps your most easily accessible piece of recent entries. Ambient Synthesist, indeed. As usual, your rambling, almost stumbling sense of rhythm comes through fine, but this time as a gentle bubbling, burbling undertone. Definitely has your stamp on it, but it really hits those Moog synth joy spots for me, too. It's a mind-soothing piece of atmospheric sweetness with a touch of mystery to it. Great work!

hey emdot, glad you liked it. i thought about something like "synthy seas" but that kind of sucks. dictionary.com defines "strange" as

Not previously known; unfamiliar.
Out of the ordinary; unusual or striking.
Differing from the normal.

so it is fitting.
as far as how i approached the theme, the moogy lead and arpeggios are obvious, but Moog also developed a line of effects pedals specializing in filtered effects, thus the phased guitar
