You™ wrote:Is it hard to get coffee in China? I thought everyone drank tea. They don't have a Starbuck's... :-o

I know, everyone has a Starbuck's.

I had Kung-Pao Chicken and fried wontons for lunch Friday. I don't suppose anyone eats that in China but I love it - especially if it's really spicy and has lots of vegetables.
Behind the massive barbed-wire fence surrounding 'The Peoples Public Joy and Happiness Center' next door is the ruined, burned-out hulk of what was once Beijing's only attempt at a 'fast food' restaurant, before it was destroyed in it's infancy by angry mobs shouting 'Down With Capitalist Dogs!' :-o

:hihi:

There's a Starbucks across the street (next to the PizzaHut) and Kung Pao chicken is a neighbourhood fav! In fact I cook it and possess three different recipes for it! :) The biggest thing to piss me off so far though is that damn new Wal Mart being built down the street -- the dust from the construction site gets my curtains all dirty.

There have been BBQs all up and down my street tonight and the fireworks are still going on at 05:30 am -- I shite you not -- these peeps love their fireworks -- because it's 'Mid-Autumn Festival' now. Eat your Moon Cakes yet? ;)

So interesting - perceptions. I ought to post some pics. :)

yeah.. post some pics...:D

got to agree with the fast food place being burnt down... not a fan of them... except when I've had too much to drink and suddenly a burger king burger before the taxi ride home seems an essential... ... Though IMO they should have burnt down pizza hut... and prolly wal mart... we are turning all our cities into carbon copies of each other :(..

down my street most people are sitting inside watching telly... like most nights...:)

thing that gets me is (and correct me if im wrong alex) but chinese places in the UK offer loads of chow mein ... but (IMHO often the more tasty) tang mein is more popular / usual in china itself ???

... and BTW ... in general (and again IMHO) szechuan (sp ??? ) style food is MUCH better than the usual cantonese stuff we normally get in chinese restuarants / takeaways over here ...

... do a little research and cook it yourself is my advice ... fresher tasting and almost as quick if youre good enough !!!

er... Benjamin -- you DID know I was joking about the angry mobs thing... yeah?

Just another standard megalopolis that happens to be located in Asia -- though I agree -- the world's cities are indeed becoming rubber-stamped via infectous globalisation...

One terribly ODD thing though, which none of my friends and I can figure out: There is absolutely NO grape jelly in any of the stores in Beijing - not a single jar -- every other kind of jelly and jam you can think of but no grape (and I have been looking for six years), yet I can get Skippy Peanut butter and Marmite anywhere.

Indeed mate. Most of the Western world only knows about Cantonese food. Ask someone here where you can get a bowl of Chow Mein and they go "Eh?" :hihi:

Szechuan food is incredible, as is a lot of the local Northern-style food (like REAL Mongolian BBQ), as is totally in the mainstream diet.

Yep -- cook it yourself. Avoid cans in supermarkets labeled 'Le Choy Chop Suey'. No one here's ever heard of that either.

Here ya go... ;)

Upping the 24 bit .ape file now :D
Music with dinner is an insult both to the cook and the violinist.

There's a generous supply of Szechuan around here and it's definitely my favorite. Thai and Vietnamese Phô are quite popular too. Unfortunately people still haven't taken up the pitchforks and torches and gone after the Starbucks' and Wal-Marts and I doubt they ever will - even though... Oh I can't get into that now...

But the real Mongolian BBQ is something special. There was a place I went to in Austin, Texas (of all places) that had awesome Mongolian BBQ - where you pick out what you want and it get thrown on an upside-down pot and cooked to perfection. Mmmm...

I do like to cook for myself, but I can't make it as good as some of the restaurants around here. And there's a Chinatown downtown where everything (if not a whole lot better) is a whole order different than out in the suburbs where I live.

There's just not enough cheese in Asian cuisines for my tastes... :D

just so everyone knows I haven't pre-ordered anything because it "made" me use paypal instead of my card...it said something about this card was connected with my paypal so I'm transfering over 120 bux and will order 4 when it's there...:D
The highest form of knowledge is empathy, for it requires us to suspend our egos and live in another's world. It requires profound, purpose‐larger‐than‐the‐self kind of understanding.

Was this before or after they burnt this particular fast food joint down? :hihi:

agree with the cook it yourself policy.. and never use pre-made sauces :hihi:... Mind you, all my attempts at shredded beef dishes have only ever ended in disaster... rather than turning crispy they seem to soak up the oil and turn into an oily soggy mess!

Though we have some really nice chinese and thai restraunts near me...

as for grape jelly.. I've never heard of that?

Great Hink! We'll reach 100 preorders soon, I can feel it. :) That means 1/5 of the production will be sold before it's made!

Yeah, I think their a chain.. we have one in several cities in the UK... all looking the same

Though there have been food poisoning reports in a lot of them... something to do with using the same spatulas to cook a new batch as to serve the last...
