Though it's a bit more work than plugging in a UAD 1176 or LA2A, adding a tape saturator like Voxengo AnalogFlux TapeBus, or a tube saturator like TBT Tubelimit in line with a good clean compressor or limiter can work all sorts of magic. IMO it is a valid option to stay "native".
