Very true, the argument was much the same here in the UK - Here we had Celestion, B+W, Rogers, Spendor, Tannoy, Mordaunt Short ect. And the classical and popular music camps would take sides as to their favorites. Interesting you should mention AR (Acoustic Research) as I'm still using a pair of 18LS's which date back to the mid-80's on the setup I use connected to this 'ere computer

The biggest single variable in listening to music is speakers and headphones -- everything else (D/A filters, amplifiers, etc.) pales in comparison.

No way! here you've defiantly got it wrong and the one bit of kit which proved that little theory wrong was this

This little beastie turned the above theory on its head - Garbage in, Garbage out. The most important part of the audio chain is the source. Speakers/Headphones cannot rescue a duff input signal, the better the Speakers/Headphones the more they will reveal deficiencies in the source signal.

My mate picked one up at his local dump. Complete with an EKOS arm and a Klyde cartridge. He paid £15 for it. c**t.

they still make the exact SP12 with zero changes, and you can walk straight up and bounce the platter straight up and down, even on 40 year old models.

Well, I still have a beloved pair of two-way Advents from the late 70s that I will probably be buried with. :)

Before my pancreas went to hell in a basket and I could actually work - (well basically back when I wasn't broke) I used too have a beautiful pair of 15" Dual Concentric Tannoy Red's + Pro-end Luxman AMP and a decent turntable.
It used too be the most blissful acoustic and classical listening experience imagineable.
I can also remember playing Kate Bush's "Hounds of Love" LP on that system and having my titts blown off over how freeeaakin' orgasmic "Hello Earth" sounded through the Tannoy's.
Those where the day's.
Now it's Behringer Truth's for me

Can't bitch really because they're damn good for the price.
Hmmmmmmmmmmm it sure brings back memories though.

I got a nice pair of Celestion SL600si's banging away on the main system - Ambiance and detail.
