Hi,

I had a really positive review of my (to be released) album on Sound on Sound 'business end' september 2005. I thought it a good idea to the share some of the songs here. Grab 'em while they're still free.

Dance All Night
Feeling Good Was Easy

This would be a good place to advertise my free drumkit http://kingstondrums.bombsquad.org/ as the samples are heavily featured on both of the tracks. By the way, these songs have very few loops and only in key points although the sound will tell you different. This was also something the Sound on Sound review panel was unaware of. The trick was to make things sound looped, while in actuality almost everything is programmed and recorded live so the "loops" can live and move.

listening to "Feeling Good"

has a bit of a moby touch... like it nevertheless

Dance All Night is nice, too.... like the guitar lick

the bottom end could need a bit of "clearing out" (at least here on my setup) it sounds a bit too crowded frequency wise

but all in all... very nice

Cool stuff, Michael! I agree with Mully about the Moby vibe to "Feeling Good", though there was also a touch of Fatboy Slim in there, too.

I still think it's pretty cool. I never expected Bobby McGee to ever be used that way.

I found "Dance All Night" a touch more repetitive, but it was good fun to listen to, also.

Thanks for posting the songs - I don't have the expertise to comment on the merits of the mastering but I appreciate you putting your stuff out there.

Drums, though, seem a bit out in front on my monitor's (ADAM P11) but that's probably what you intended.

Catchy. Bottom end is a bit muddy, but I like it: kindof lo-fi like the orig. loop. When the 2nd man comes in, asks "sat you?" - you could have someone rap overthat to great effect! (Dance)

Feeling was ctachy, as well- more melodic-expected more cuts/drums after about 1.5 minutes. That's not a good/bad things, just where my mind was headed.

Cool, thanks for sharing! I am going to keep these on the HD. They sound very fatboy slimi-ish to me

The 100-300 Hz range is a big problem with my monitors in almost any untreated room I've been mixing in. I should invest in bass traps or something.

Dip that range by about 2db and the mud should clear. You can even see it clearly in a spectrum analyser. At the time of quick mastering these I didn't take the room into account as much as I should've.

The repetition is intentional. These songs are a blatantly commercial "jingle" production and will most likely appear in ads somewhere. Well, that's the goal anyway.

Yeah, the influence is heavily there. I've since (these were 2004) made music that sounds like me instead of someone else. And I've given up sampling other people.

Skint mailed me about the demo and said their artist roster was full but that they'd like to hear about any future progress and music I make. It probably means that if I get a small label deal out of this they might be more interested.

Congrats on the SOS review, it brings alot of attention and the reviewers seemed sensible, a stroke of luck! (It was funny that the only time I'd bothered to read business end in ages was to read the review of your work, it inspired me to send my album to mute records).

I really like the first track and appreciate the sound that your aiming at ie. compression is a must. It really made me want to listen to more Jimi, its nice to hear chatchy guitar licks. Oh and that trick with the jumping CD was definatley my idea first, I just never got round to working out how to do it!

Hi Mr. Tingle,

the CD skip trick is actually very simple to do. I did this long a go, probably more than two years when I made the first version of this track. The track itself changed considerably, but the skip effect remained.

It's done in logic using simple looping. I bounced that part of the and looped it creatively: first it skips a couple of times and then jams completely. The fact that it skips in exact triads is an accident: I measured the authentic skipping speed, and it happened to coincide with the track perfectly. It would probably be easier to do this trick nowadays using the plugin Phutboyslim for example.

I added a real sampled CD skip glitch. First I did it thru Exact Audio Copy but the glitch sounded "too digital". I then decided to record it from a cheap consumer CD player thru the analog outputs. This made a more regocnizable glitch.

Heck, I could release the skip sample here in KVR if someone needs it.
