Opeth's Ghost Reveries is simply breathtaking. Kerrang says it will change your life and they weren't far off the mark! The arrangements are fascinating and Mikael Akerfeldt's folk voice and acoustic guitar work are more prevalent than on any of their other CDs.

Give it a listen.

This is the 1st Opeth album I have bought or even listened to and I agree with your take on this. Breathtaking. The more I listen, the more appreciate it and the more I am amazde with what they have done.

I never imagined that gritty B3 and rotary Wurlie would fit into this genre so well, but it really does. Fantastic keyboard playing.

I've been meaning to check this out. How much have they mellowed out? I'm not expecting a new Blackwater Park or anything, but I hope they haven't abandoned their former style for a more Sörskogen feel...not that there was anything wrong with the Sörskogen stuff I've heard, mind you :)

I think it's quite good, but there's a noticable reduction of metal-schtick. I think this is the best album to pull out if you get a new girlfriend and you want to show her some metal she might enjoy, as opposed to Rotting Christ or Dimmu Borgir (I'm specificially thinking of "Tormentor of Christian Souls") which would probably cause her to get a restraining order against you.

It's not as hard, but it's still a good metal album. In fact, I'm not quite sure what metal sub-genre it falls into. I can't think of anything else that sounds quite like it, or at least nothing that's done it this well.

I'd say it's more haunting than any metal album I've ever heard. I'm sure you'll be able to appreciate it, though maybe not in the same way as a Nile album.

You can hear all 10:21 of "The Grand Conjuration" here: www.roadrunnerrecords.co.uk/opeth/ecard.htm

Oh, and unlike Samael, they haven't forgotten Satan! :D  :D
Excuse all the blood.

Former style hasn't been abandoned; it's just been infused with more folksy clean singing and acoustic parts, and more harmony has been added. There's some unusual stonerishly cool parts (a whole song, even) that are downright brilliant. Melodies are more complex and doubled a lot with keyboard--something I wanted more of on their other songs. Drumming and percussion is getting unbelievably good. Production has that nice dry, in-your-face punchiness taken to the nth degree.

They are progessive without the cheese.

Sounds good. Ive got it ordered from Amazon but its on an order with something else thats not available yet. Might just buy it locally and cancel the Amazon order.

I've been listening to Ghost Reveries and Damnation nonstop the past few weeks. It's vile for me to imagine listening to anything else anymore...

Anyone seen the Lamentations DVD? It's inspiring as hell...

Yes. The studio documentary on it is riveting and very well done. I was less impressed with the live set, but the DVD as a whole is still very entertaining.

I can't wait for the Steven Wilson/Mikael Akerfeldt project, which has long been talked about.

Heard some great reviews, but I still haven't heard them. Do they live up to the hype?

BTW, I just picked up Choirs of the Eye, by Kayo Dot, and it just blew me away! Truly amazing, hard to categorize stuff that I think some Opeth fans might like.
Haunting stuff, not as riff based as Opeth, but more of a abstract/evolving approach. Some GSYBE style instrumentation with beautiful clean vox (The guy sounds a bit like Jeff Buckley), and just the right touch of emotionally charged screams and heavy guitars.

Unfortunately, it looks like the link to "Marathon" (one of my favorite tracks  ) is broken, but be sure and check out "The Manifold Curiosity", as I think they give you all 14 minutes of it!

Don't know; I dn't know what the 'hype' is; I found a review of the album at Aquarius Records, listened to the three snippets they had posted, and ordered it straight off.

(Do a search for 'Blut Aus Nord' at www.aquariusrecords.org and you'll find the snippets)

I got the two-CD set, which includes the 'ambient' <cough> EP/mini-album/whatever "Thematic Emanation Of Archetypal Multiplicity" which I find utterly amazing. Some of "The Work Which Transforms God" itself is less to my taste, but probably spot-on for more typical fans of the genre, but generally, Im pretty impressed.

There's a few riffs in there I'd love to sample which is not something I'd ever typically think of doing.
