Working with ST2, I was wondering about a few things...

1. If you load a sound in slot one and slot two... and save it, does that load as a single sound later, or as the two sounds in slot one and two??

2. Does a multi do the aforementioned??

3. Can keywords be used to define a whole folder??

I know I should re-read the manual, but humor me... :)

Dan, how's it going, buddy?

When you load two or more instruments to different slots you save a Module Preset, which is a combi object that will recall those instruments with whatever tweaks, effects processing, midi assignments, etc, that is, the current status of what you've done to set up what you want to do. This is stored seperately from the source instruments. You can mix and match any combination of midi channels to address the instuments so you can have a multitimbral setup, a layered patch, or a couple of different layered multitimbral sounds.

I can't answer about keywords, I've never used the search function.

Do read the manual, early and often. It is short but enlightening.

Hey John! ...going pretty well, doing everything in Logic these days! Trying to figure out this ST2 interface, and maybe program some patches. Since I have the sounds from SS1, SS2, and ST2L... I'm sort of trying to sort the good stuff from the average... Lot of sounds! Also, still trying to get up to speed with Logic...

Haven't finished too much, (too busy...) here's something I finally exported!

If you're taking about saving child presets (variations on a sound, revealed by the black arrow): The child presets are saved for a single slot. So if you have two sounds loaded (into two slots), and you want to save your changes back to your sound library, then you save each slot individually.

DHR53 wrote:2. Does a multi do the aforementioned??
Not quite. A multi (also known as a combi preset in ST2) saves all the currently loaded slots. It basically takes a snapshot of the entire plugin, so you can restore the whole setup in one go.

The keywords are for individual sounds. If you like all the instruments in one folder, you don't need keywords - they're all together already! Keywords are great for grouping instruments across several different folders.

Hope that makes sense, and helps. :)

Thanks! Kim! So where do the "User presets" go? I can't seem to get my presets to show up in the list? And to elaborate on my first question... I load a sound (child preset) in slot one, then a sound in slot 2 (same midi channel) then save it... A. where does it go, and B. will that load as a single sound later in slot one??

Thanks!
:)

There are two kinds of "user" presets - child presets and combi presets. Both are stored as files on your computer.

A Child preset is stored in the same directory as the parent preset it's based on. It appears under the parent preset, revealed by the black triangle in the instrument list.

A Combi preset is stored with all the other combi presets, in a directory separate to the other instruments. This directory depends on whether you're using Windows or MacOSX. Combi presets are accessible from the top of the ST2 plugin window (the LCD-style text, labelled "LOAD").

Addressing your earlier question, there's no way to combine several slots into a single slot.

I'm on OSX... 10.4.2. So my question was: is there a "user preset" folder these saved sounds go into?? Because I've saved a few, and they don't show up in the browser, and I can't find a "user preset" folder anywhere? I DID see a preset, in the child drop down of a parent preset that I altered, but the "named" presets I saved seemed to have disappeared??

Back to the manual, I guess??

:(

folder names where combies get stored are an interesting info, for both PC and Mac, also because one might like to save them in case of a new install of a machine.

Sorry, I'm still not sure which kind of preset you're talking about. See my previous post. There are two kinds - combi presets and child presets. Both could be called "user preset" (which is why you'll have to be a bit more specific), both are "named" presets (no such thing as an unnamed preset anyway).

Telebunke, the combi presets on MacOSX are in ~/Library/Preferences/IK Multimedia/SampleTank2/. On Windows they're in C:\Program Files\IK Multimedia\SampleTank2\.

Hope that helps.

I was forced to break out the manual! Still don't get how some of this stuff works?? For instance: The save "multi button" saves all the FX in the slots, (if you save it in the FX presets folder.) The "save" button is just supposed to save individual fx slots... which doesn't make much sense to me... Also, ST2, has crashed a bunch of times when saving "multi", and "save" FX presets. Hmmm...

I've saved a few (child) presets, and some of them worked, some have frozen Logic, and I had to force quit to get out?? Now, I have put all my SS2 sounds and my ST2 sounds in the ST2 folder, and I'm loading them in ST2 at the same time. Could it be too much to load in the instrument?? and be causing it to crash... I'm using a Dual 2.0 G5 with 2.5 gigs of ram... I've had it crash saving multi-fx and patches... ?? Version 2.0.8 :help:

If you're getting regular crashes, your best bet is to contact IK Support and they'll go through the issue with you.
