Please, let's get serious-Jungle Boogie by Kool & The Gang. Quincy Jones called it the tightest funk jam he ever heard. (even though he never wrote it himself) The reason why is because the bass line is so tight, cool, and funky that you almost could shit someone else's pants when you hear it..

I've seen Prince and Larry Graham (Sly & the Family Stone) play many times, but I once saw them "duel" on the basses at an aftershow in London and I creamed myself 
As far as bassists go, those two take a lot of beating, but I'd have to add people like Rhonda Smith, Sonny Thompson, Mark King, John Taylor (Duran Duran), Mick Karn, Bootsy Collins and I'm sure I have forgotten many others.
All this reminds me of a "musicians joke"....
A bloke goes on holiday to Africa, and as he steps off the plane, the first thing that strikes him is the sound of rhythmic drumming in the distance, strong and powerful. As he leaves the airport and gets in a taxi, he asks the driver..."Does the drumming ever stop ?"
The driver replies..."Drums stop, VERY bad !"
As the taxi pulls up at the hotel, the guy gets out and still the drums are pounding. As he checks in, he says to the receptionist..."Does the drumming ever stop ?""
The receptionist replies..."Drums stop, VERY bad !"
Our intrepid traveller retires to his room and STILL the drums are rumbling. The concierge arrives at his room with the luggage and the man says to him...."Do the feckin' drums EVER stop ?!?!"
The concierge replies..."Drums stop, VERY bad !"
The guy replies..."Dude, everywhere I go, I hear those drums, it's doing my head in....why is it so feckin' bad if the drums stop ?!?!?"
The concierge says..."When the drums stop, it's time for the bass solo !!!"
