Hi guys,
I'm moving to apple (g4 ibook)..
I kind of like garageband, which works quite fine.

Anything else to go for?

1.price and budget/free options welcome
2.very basic: live audio takes on guitar is what I need, so a sequencer that have good audio capabilities.
3.no need for too advanced versions now, some good imtermediate software is welcome.

4.thx! :D

Tracktion or Ableton Live!

Garageband is cool as a sketchpad and even for writing out entire pieces and importing them into a sequencer for further work.

I used Garageband briefly, then Tracktion came along and I erased it completely. GB is OK as yes a sketchpad, but it's a processor hog and the available tools are limited.

Intuem looks interesting, haven't tried it myself tho.

The cool thing with GB are 1. the track freeze function which let me easily have 12 tracks in a recent project and 2. the beautiful score function!

i heartily recommend tracktion. i've used all the sequencers that are prominent today and Tracktion has by far the slickest and easiest audio manipulation going. it also has a hard-drive friendly freeze, which keeps all freezed tracks in a single audio track, reducing hd load. and if you do use midi, and it sounds like it's not a very high priority for you, don't believe the negative hype about T2's midi capabilities, they really are perfectly useable, and i have no problems with them whatsoever (and i use them extensively).

download the demo, you won't regret it. you may decide it's not for you, but it's a good experience to try it out.
Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

Everything Haydxn said is true, plus you've got modular instrument/fx rack routing to any track, in series, parallel or both: it's an incredibly powerful tool which I've barely begun to explore.

The one that I would recommend is Live 5 (probably a little on the pricy side), but the ease of use and the way you can sequence "live" the way you want it is just so simple. :)

Other sequencer requires you to add a track here...add a track there (don't know about Tracktion)...but they all seems to work like that. And if you want to add this to another part, you'll have to cut and paste...and that's so time consuming. Mind you though, if you want to "edit" in Live 5, you'll have to do the same...but the fact that you can record on the go in "real-time", that saves you the time setting it up. After that you can just drag and drop the parts wherever you want.

Live 5 supports both AU and VST. I'm running Live 5 along with Reason 3...Rewire. That's ALL you'll ever need...maybe some "mix-down" plug-ins...but you get everything in one (or two) little package. :)

Hope this helps!

P.S. I have a PowerBook G4 btw...and no problem so far!

There are some very interesting programs out for Mac. Intuem, G, Numerology, maybe have some fun with Sonasphere (now that the lates Bidule beta runs as AU, Sonasphere has just become even more interesting).

I'd second the vote for live. Its audio warping features make it the most suitable choice for what you're looking to do: track guitar. With Live, you can warp your audio, so notes that you play out of time can be shifted back towards the grid. It's the most intuitive sequencer that you'll find anywhere too. Be sure to try the demo.

Also have a looksee at Logic Express or Logic proper if you have the cash., its internal instruments/effects are great and the latest version is Apple-loops compastiblöe (or so I'm told)
I personally hated Tracktion (I might give live a closer look though!)

If you could find an older version (that somebody else is willing to part with), the upgrading price is very affordable. But it's well worth the money. :)

It's more than just a "loop" player. There are so much more you can play around with. And the effect section is "interesting" to say the least...but useful in the same time!

You can always download the demo and play around with it, I know when I did a long time ago, it just blew me away. And that's Live 2 I tried.
