For Entwistle's real take on the whole Stax/Motown trip, Smash the Mirror on Tommy does it. It's still the best ripoff of that genre that I can think of. PT does those Steve Cropper lines to a T

Come to think of it, I think I'm wrong about Reach Out- I remember reading somewhere that Carol Kaye did the bass on that (yes, the same lady who does the bass lesson books). She was the other Motown bassist.

"1963" by New Order (the original version though i.e. the B side to "True Faith") - beautiful song & beautiful basslines from Peter Hook.
More recently, "Saltwater" by Chicane (the one with Maire Brennan's vocal supposedly sampled from Clannad's "Harry's Game theme" but Senor Bracegirdle is good with his wind-ups so he probably got her in to record it specially). Anyway, to be honest, only the bit after the overly long intro when the bass first kicks in to prelude the beats coming in - THAT bass bit is awesome. The rest of the track though is, imho, fairly pants.
