I never saw them, as the one time they came to town when I was a fan, it was at a drinking club and I was underaged!

My personal favorites from the KC repetoire were always the heavy ones like The Howler and Requiem. I think I am the only fan of the latter ever. Even hardcore KC fans get all edgy when you play that song too loud.

Ever heard the Fripp album 'Exposure'? Now that is some intense stuff.

Sorry, john, I have to concur with the populace KC fanbase here with requiem. I can see what they're getting at, but I just don't like it.. Like the 'Thrak' stuff, can't abide it. They released a mini-album of just 'Thrakking', which was painful. I'm sure they got alot out of playing it, bit to listen to it is just...

Dinosaur, People, vroooooom, etc, I liked of the recent stuff. But it's all gone a bit stoopid to me. Oh well. LTIA i,ii,iii? Smashing stuff!

Looking forward to these promised remixes of your playing!

You know, Thrak really didn't do it for me either. I liked the first couple of minutes, but it just goes on and on.

I still prefer it to almost everything I ever hear on the radio though.

Thanks, it was all really just an outgrowth of various exercises I have written for myself over the years. But both afro-cuban and indonesian music have long been subjects of interest to me, so these influences are always operating under the surface.

I like 80's KC best. Those three albums changed my view of musical on a fundamental level, more than any other before or since.

Though the Ballamy/Bates incarnation of Earthworks comes a close second.

Sadly, subsequent versions of KC and Earthworks failed to touch me.

All I did was write to the guy! I'd exchanged a few letters (just wrote to EG records when it still existed, and he replied himself!), and then bought 'When in doubt, Roll' (an excellent book if you can find it) which said he'd done some teaching. So I wrote asking for a lesson, and he gave me a number to phone..

He charged me £20 for 1 1/2 hours..

This was 1993; I'd been in touch for a year or so upto that point, and continued for about another year when he wrote 'Don't have time to chat by post!' - so I stopped. [I was unemployed at the time, and did make a bit of a nuisance of myself... I kept writing to Anthony Phillips as well, trying to pursuade him that he needed a drummer, and I was the man..

He's a sound chap, I've spoken a bit to him at one or two earthworx gigs as well. I agree with you Markleford, that the earlier Earthworks were 'better' than the current, but an artist has to develop and move on, so I don't begrudge the new music.

I didn't see 80's KC either, but at least they did two concert videos.

I agree with you Markleford, that the earlier Earthworks were 'better' than the current, but an artist has to develop and move on, so I don't begrudge the new music.

I absolutely adore Iain Ballamy's previous and subsequent efforts. Bates' larger groups tend to lose me a bit, but are good for occasional listen. And I love his Eb peck horn playing: I started playing one because of him (and heck, started tenor sax because of Ballamy!)

I do have Bruford's book, which is pretty cool. Unfortunately, my kit is currently disassembled in the basement: gotta clean more to make room!
