In Reason, in the sequencer, I can't figure out how to view controller data on an effect track and at the same time viewing the midi notes from the instrument track that the effect is modifying. That is, I want to fine tune my effect/controller curves while viewing the notes from the instrument track.

How do I view both at the same time so I know exactly where to draw my curves?

I'm not talking about the available controllers in the instrument track for that instrument. I mean controller data from the effect which has it's own track.

I couldn't find this in the manual.

Thanks for any help.

I can't say I'm 100% fluent with Reason, but as far as I know this isn't possible.

The sequencer is the only reason (no pun intended) that's keeping me away from Reason. It really is godawful to use.

I was hoping I was just being dense and couldn't figure it out.

This seems like such a basic editing need.

The notes have to be lined up with the controller data to see exactly where one wants to edit a curve.

The only way I am able to do it now is:

a) realtime automation of the midi knobs (but you can't do precise editing this way)

b) play the song back and draw the controller curve with the pencil tool as I listen to, but can't see, the notes.

Maybe someone else can shed some light on this matter. I'm new to Reason and so far I LOVE it except for not being able to accomplish this simple editing task.

Thanks for your reply arke.

This is just a work-around, but still: you can copy the notes from the instrument track and copy them to your fx track for reference. There you can open the controler and the note lane in parallel. Since the effect doesn't accept any note information, they will just sit there and do nothing. Should be good enough for aligning notes and controller data.

Play, you are the man!

That was it. Rather simple but effective workaround.

I'm happy now.

If you have the effect in the same combinator as the instrument, you'll be able to see the automation curve along with the notes.
