Sidechain

Someone knows a way to use an external key audio signal for a gate plug-in? Is there a gate plug-in who can receive an external key in its side-chain? Will this function be available in next Sonar/Cubase, like it does in Pro Tools?

the db-audioware plugins (inc gate) do.

I am sure there are others.

Slightly not to do with the topic, I haven't been able to work out what a practical use for sidechaining is, other than maybe a ducking effect for dance tracks. Or is that something else? :(

Its great for dance -> you can make the kick cut through. If you just use a normal compressor on the whole mix the kick can be reduced if another loud sound occurs at the same time. Obviously you want the kick as loud as possible and constant volume.

Using the Dry signal to gate a reverb.
Using the kick drum to open a gate on the bass guitar so that the kick and the bass occur at the same time.
Using the snare to open the gate on a white noise track and adding that to the snare.
Using one guitar track to open the gate on another so they start and finish exactly at the same time....
That just using a gates side chain with no processing. If you route the tracks signal through an EQ and then back into the side chain you can have more control over when the gate opens.
there are all kinds of tricks for compressor sidechains as well.

I've started playing with automation as an alternative to side-chaining. Presuming the signal you want to use as the sidechain is in a simple pattern (such as a 4/4 kick drum), then it's easy to create a volume envelope for the signal you want to effect and place this automation alongside the pattern(s) for your sidechain input. The other advantage I've found is that this method allows you to duck the signal earlier than using a sidechain.

sidechaining is a concept that can be put to use in many ways. not just with typical sidechain-enabled plugins either. any time you want some kind of dynamic variation, the idea of using one signal to affect another can give you more options than just, for instance, using a modulation effect.
a great possibility is to have an envelope follower that generates MIDI CC messages. put such a plugin on a track whose audio you want to use as a controller, and then route the CC data to another plugin to control some parameter; the level of the control track will be used to modulate a control on the other (which could be anything; filter cutoff, bit reduction, delay time, etc)

Kick, punch, it's all in the mind.

does such a plug exist - becuase this sounds very interesting to mehaydxn wrote: a great possibility is to have an envelope follower that generates MIDI CC messages.
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

I just downloaded it... But... How could I assign inputs? I mean... I've got Kick Drum on track 1 and Bass Guitar on track 2... What's the routing?Debutante wrote:I think Slim Slow Sliders Side Chain Gate does just that.
DB Audioware Dynamics Processor works well, but it's not for free...

It'd be nice if there was one with a slew rate limiter though, since using natural instruments with env2midi tends to produce a crumbly sort of output (and thus cracks and pops with plugin parameters which aren't designed for automation).
