you should check carefully for other programs running in the background - recently i bought a compact flash card reader and it's utility ran all the time and made cubase unusable with crackles..

Post

have you tried altering sample rates and buffer settings , this usually sorts out crackles....

PS i'd binn the creative , its a games card , this is a music forum.

Yes right. He's using ~1000$ software on a ~30$ soundcard, doesn't even mention the new version that has been hyped on every media channel for months and just conveniently hasn't been cracked yet.

And yes, how silly of me, of course I should have assumed that he tried 3.1 already, and as it didn't work either the logical conclusion was to roll back to an earlier version that didn't work either. How short-sighted of me...

Sorry folks but I'm fresh out of gullibility.

A higher latency setting for your ASIO driver should help.

For everyone that helped thanks so much. asio4all worked the best for me. thanks again!

for those that didn't, not that its any of YOUR business but I only just recieved sx 3 from musicstore.de and it DIDN'T cost me anywhere near $1000...also I've been specing up my workstation in these past two weeks. the audigy LS is just something I have for the moment (from my old machine). after getting a new machine and cubase the finances are running somewhat low! next stop: m-audio soundcard. but I have to make due with this one for the time being (hence the need for an ASIO solution). next time please don't jump to conclusions.

:)

Back to business, So guys whats the best "cheap" soundcard to use for cubase?

So then, the first thing you should do is get the FREE steinberg upgrade to 3.1 that may just fix your issues, ya know

As for the soundcard, there is only one - audiophile 24/96. At it's current price, it is quite possibly the best value piece of hardware ever.

I've just signed up to some other forums (including cubase.net). but I've been a "silent" member of kvr for the past year and I posted here friday at 3:30am (ZzzZz). I'm gonna download the upgrade later and give it a try, afraid to try for all the problems people seem to be having...I've been having a lot of hardware issues with my new system...couldn't even start it yesterday...but now I'm sorted.

BTW: ttoz..that wasn't directed at you.

audiophile 24/96 it is then...I've been hearing alot about that.

at a great price too! I'll have to wait a couple of weeks though!

I've never been there, but I've heard all kind of stories: you don't wanna be there. Our SuperProToolsUser would have stood out as helpfull over there ;-)
At least, that's the impression I get...

OT: That's not entirely true. The mods are usually quite helpful. With legit problems. But as one of the most frequently asked questions for some time was "how do I record my midi as audio" serious users gets a bit annoyed.

OnT: I don't understand the priority of the original poster. Why start with an expensive and not that easy sequencer when the most important part of your setup is really lacking (sound card, and I guess, monitors)? Surely one of the smaller Cubase packages would be sufficient (can be upgraded) and the saved cash could have been used on the soundcard. I not trying to be a smart-ass (well maybe a little) but that doesn't make sense to me. That aside, crackling is almost always a problem with asio drivers (ie. not using them) and/or driver settings.

It will never be outdated topic, so here are our 2 solutions you can check, hope it helps
CUBASE SX 1.6 (and onwards) CRACKLING PROBLEM - SOLUTIONS

Often, you may have "crackling" in virtual instruments (such a bass or drums, etc)
so here is the SOLUTION FOR CRACKLING: (1-st or 2-cond options below, as this):

OPTION 1
The 'crackling' reason (with newer computers/laptops) could be the setting
in your Cubase "VST Multitrack" settings. So, go here, using these tabs:
"Devices" (it's on your main cubase menu) > "Device Setup"...> "VST Miltitrack" >
"Expert"...)
You will see, over there is one "tick" saying "Multi Processing" (it deals with your CPU),
so just UNTICK that box and leave it empty, to disable multi-threading with Cubase ...
Now - press OK, or "apply" to get it done, and exit the menus by pressing "ok".
When done, try to play your song(s) again with Cubase SX, and it should be ok now ...
(basically - you need to disable multi threading of your CPU with [in] your Cubase).

OPTION 2
Use the command "Save project to new folder" and save your song to a different drive,
ideally - save it where the drive of your Windows desktop is located on ...
Then close Cubase and open up your song from the file on that drive.
See if your problem persists ?
If the problem goes away, then you know that the pops and clicks are
due to problems with Cubase accessing data from the different project drive ...
