How to make crazy squarepusher/aphex twin beats.

I can't figure out the god damn secret to those beats. I have the amen bass and snare loaded "6 velocity levels for each" in Kontakt 2 and I have tried making some crazy breakbeats in midi and then running Kontakt into LiveCut, but it just does not give me what I want.
Can anyone give me some insight or send me a solution via email.

BTW, I also have reaktor so if you have a smart, controllable, audio rearranger than that would be cool.

You can't just "program" those.

i may or may not know what i'm talking about. but these are things i do:
1. you should have a drum kit consisting of kick, hat, snare, etc., and then tons of additional kicks and snares that are processed versions of your originals. if your host lets you apply effects to an individual hit thats awesome otherwise open hits in an audio editor and use timestretch, very short delay times, pitch bending, etc.
actually you should do this with several drum kits.
2. the fast complex stuff sounds a lot better if you play with the decay of the hits, breaks sound cleaner at high speeds if the decays are short.
3. also play with pitch of individual hits, 4 16th note snares in a row sounds one way, if you pitch the first and third snare up a semitone it sounds another way.
4. after you've sequenced your drums you may want to bounce sections of to audio and then further process those bits and reinsert them.
listen to "out with your clique" on my (stupid) myspace page for an example of something i did more or less this way; www.myspace.com/eatlittlebabies

Yes, you can. It just takes a long time and a lot of patience. But this is the only way to get every single hit exactly how you like it. Step-sequenced automation of fx (gates, filters, etc.) and use of granular delay stuff/slicers makes it easier.PhoenixNine wrote:Take a listen to sqpusher's Ultravisitor.glaucomys wrote:Just program it like any other beat in you sequencer of choice.

You can't just "program" those.
Try this for inspiration:
Setup one of the random beat mangler plugins to go nuts, and render out a bunch of bars of your breakbeat. Tweak and repeat. Now you have a whole assload of bars of chaotic rhythm going on, and you can just pick out your favorite bars, or better yet, slice your favorite bars up and stick in the mangled individual hits here and there, wherever sounds good. Play with automating the pitch in your sampler too, and any other parameter (especially envelopes).

Holy f**k nvoise,
excellent beats!!! and excellent tips. I'm going to save them in a notepad file!
What sequencer under what host did you use to program those beats?

Sam.
<edit> do you have more tips to share with us?

keyman - thanks, i use acid to sequence drum parts and audiomulch and cool edit to process them. i'm sure there are superior set-ups; i'm just using what i've grown familiar with.
quantize - i love anally programing drum kits for hours, all night long, with your mother. presets can lick my ass on the drum machine. =P
(mdsp is a genius and i'm sure livecut is awesome.)

You certainly can, these guys *meticulously* program their beats. And I don't know about these two, but Autechre also code there own sequencing programs too.PhoenixNine wrote:Take a listen to sqpusher's Ultravisitor.glaucomys wrote:Just program it like any other beat in you sequencer of choice.

You can't just "program" those.
But, if you are lazy and want to approximate such sounds, head over to www.smartelectronix.com and download Supertrigger, and all the stuff from Destroy FX.
