 Need help. I have a few questions.

1. It is possible to get an impulse from the output of hardware correct (example, a drum machines audio output)

2. How and with what do you record anc process an impulse?

We were working on the sp1200 emulation, and instead of trying to use a bit reducer we were gonna try and use a real imuplse from the machine itself. Tell me, is this possible? Thanks!

Yes you can, if the machine can load .wav files.
Construct an impulse wav in your fav audio editor, play that on the machine while you record it on the PC. Us an excellent audio card...

Ok, and what do I do after that? The sound I fed into it would come right back into the computer wouldn't it?

Anybody? I can't comprehend how this whole thing works if there is a sound in the wav file.

don't know this stuff, sorry, but I imagine there is an application that compares the generated wave to the original and notes the difference. THis difference is then saved as an impulse. Seriously, I have no idea, but hey, free bump!

Isn't it just a recorded noise burst from a set environment. You would need the perfect noise burst though.

I thought all you needed was a click or tap of some sort.

To capture an impulse of a room you play a frequency sweep and record it in the room. To capture a device (sp1200?) you feed that sweep/wavefile to it and capture the playback? The coloration of the device is then recorded/effected by that said device which changes the sound or frequency sweep. Since the original sweep is a known quanity the comparrison is the effected recording. And this is the impulse. I'm going off the set instructions of making a impulse for Acoustic Mirror. The soundfile for doing this is in SoundForge. 2 Things effect the quality of an impulse. Quality of the playback device in the enviroment and quality of the recording device on capture. Capturing a device is simpler as the file is played through it and you capture the playback using the best you can muster.

How exactly do you achieve this though? I must know, as someone else is doing this impulse for me, and i'm running them through it. I can't afford such an expensive machine myself. Could you break this down for me please?

Ok, now he is wanting to know what impulse, as well as which frequency to use. I am trying to catch the impulse of the sp1200 drum machine's output. What would be best? Anyone?

Go to Voxengo. Read up. And follow the instructions. If you purchase the thing you will get what you need to make impluses. The sp1200 is a drum machine? If you simply capture the preset sounds from it what you have is the same thing. No need to make an impulse from this machine as each drum sound is run through the chain, is effected, so needs no further mods. I'd be hard pressed to imagine any other reason to do any more.
