Quicktime is teh 5UX0r!

I've recently been having a go with Quicktime and was wondering if I could get some feedback on this, even if it is 'better your should ask [here]'

The problem is this: I need Quicktime on my machine to preview mp3s from kompakt-mp3.net. I have two issues:

(a) playback is glitchy and unlistenable on my RME HDSP Multiface and on my laptop soundcard.

(b) Quicktime now wants to play all server pushed mp3s - I am no longer prompted to 'save as'. basically, links with the extention 'mp3' I can right click and everything else is ABDUCTED for glitchy playback by quicktime.

Things I have done:

- googled around quite a bit
- changed MIME settings in Mozilla, Firefox and Quicktime through the control panel settings
- downloaded the Quicktime Alternative
- tried changing the sound settings in Quicktime control panel.

still no dice. I have learned that if I remove the plugin dll from C:\Program Files\mozilla.org\Mozilla\plugins (npqtplugin.dll) I get my mp3 MIME settings back, that is hardly a solution.

Strangely enough, Quicktime Alternative fixed playback problems in iTunes, but not my web browser(!).

I do have another 'non-music' computer I feel I could probably get to work properly for this purpose, but I hate admitting defeat on technical issues - although Quicktime being the total POS it is (seemingly unchangeable MIME settings being one example ) this may be an exception. Every other method of playback, winamp, windows media player, etc, work flawlessly.

yeah,i've had that problem with alt quicktime in that it catches all mp3 link in ffox.it plays ok though.i tried uninstalling it but it still tried to catch them,but then said 'you need quicktime'.i reinstalled altqt,and the only work around i found was to drag mp3 links into my fave mp3 player which would then play them ok.

Have you tried uninstalling QT and disassociating Firefox with QT, also changing the default player for something else? I'd recommend WinAmp for music and Media Player Classic for mpegs and avi's.
If you set a player as the default application for 'x' file types, it should over-ride the request for QT from that site. I may be wrong, but it works fine for me on other sites.
Also, sack QT off and just have QT Alternative if you have to have QT at all.
It's intrusive, invasive and has caused me a sack full of problems in the past.
I won't entertain it anymore.

Just visited kompakt-mp3.net and it seems they have QT embedded as their default player.

To me that puts them in the category "do not visit".
I want to choose which player I use.

Open Quicktime:

Under the menu:
Edit -> Preferences -> Browser -> "Mime Settings" button

Unchecking mp3 helped me.

When it comes to playback on a RME card I have the same problems. Havn't looked into it yet.

Yeah I would but I really need to get some mp3s off that site for DJ gigs... I did fully uninstall QT and am just running QT Alt, same problems. It's good to know I'm not the only one having these problems, I can't believe how poorly quicktime works and I detest anything that steals associations like that.

I have set winamp as the default player everywhere for mp3s...

in mozilla: edit->prefs->helper apps I have everything set to default to winamp although configured for 'save to disk'.

control panel->folder options>file types 'mp3' is set to winamp and finally

control panel->quicktime->file types everything is TURNED OFF. quicktime is my default player for NADA according to that one.

is there some hidden registry stuff?

when you say "disassociating Firefox with QT" (or in my case Moz), you are refering to removing the dll from the plugin folder and/or altering the helper apps settings? quicktime no longer appears in helper apps except maybe for .mov files and yet it still continues to suck down those mp3s.

like I said if I can't get it to work I will just run it off my other computer it will probably work fine there, but it sure is frustrating as all hell.

Everything is turned off there too... it seems Quicktime really chokes on the RME. Weird thing is that when I switch the default soundcard to my laptop soundcard, same playback issues.

If you are using Firefox you might want to try the Launchy plugin:

It allows you to right-click on a URL and select a different application with which to open it. It works well in similar situations for me.

i douched my system of QT over 5 years ago and never looked back. when ever i get a new machine or configure a work machine i purge it from that too. i know this prolly helps little to none, but i feel your pain.

So it has become worse than it ever was! Found it silly already that it insisted to install QT2 when I already had QT3 there. Never heard of backwards compatibility, the morons...

Oh yeah, I meant Launchy. Linky is another useful plugin.

I think you can just use Notepad to edit it. It's just text. I haven't had to create my own files for it so I haven't gone through that procedure. You might want to email the developer. He responded quickly to a question I had a long time ago. Check to be sure the file is in the correct directory and that "scan for new applications" is enabled in the plugin options.

You said "Firefox" browser, right?

Try 'Tools/Options/Downloads' menu. You can change how Firefox handles different file extensions.
