hi i'm new to these forums but have been reading for sometime.

I have a problem with logic 5.5.1

Everytime i play this track i've made it keeps freezing and i get this error message:

ASIO:
system overload
The audio engine was not able to process all the required data in time
(-10011)

This is becoming a right pain as i can't even bounce the track off.

I think it might be down to a few reasons which are either:
1. my productions are getting a little better and my machine is struggling to process the info (which i don't think it is as it's a pentium 4, 2.8 processor)
2. i don't have enough ram (i only have 512 ram) so would this cause the problem
3. i was looking through the preferences part in logic the other day and maybe i've changed a setting without realising. (which i doubt i have done as i'm always ultra careful)

I don't think my soundcard is the problem either as it should cope fine, it's a tascam us122 and i've downloaded the recent drivers

if anyone can help that would be fantastic.
many thanks

Can be for a Vsti o Vst. Logic 5.5.1 has problems with some the last Vsts o Vstis and gives this error. Guru for example.

cheers.

this is the machine struggling have you "Start / Control Panel / system /advanced /Adjust for best performance" in xp,
or try googleing optimizing windows for audio, Also have you recently starting using a new plugin ? cos this maybe causing it, If you bounce down the tracks with the cpu heavy plugins to different audio tracks it should solve it, another 512 ram would help too.

I've only got a 2.4 so I have that problem quite a lot with all my fft processing and ...
but I digress, Logic usually handles VST's which aren't doing anything while your playing back quite well, but not all the time - I usually end up muting the plugins which won't be used in 'this take' manually to ensure that the cpu is only being used for what I want.
you could also increase the buffer delay in your hardware settings, that would give you a little more overhead.
hope that helps!

I thin k its a RAM thing - I get it now 'cos I've recently changed my laptop, but I've only got 512M of RAM where I had 1G before.

It generally happens when you play through a song for the first time as Logic loads the audio into its buffer (it appears to me :) ) Once I've been through a track once it usually settles down.

I use DirectSound with MAGIX MIDI Studio 10 (Logic 5.4)-I have a CMedia 9738-onboard audio, on a P4 2.4GHz.
Very few problems even with my PC's 512MB RAM.

turn off direct monitoring

thanks for all the comments guys.
i'm definately gonna get some more RAM anyway so maybe that will ease the problem a little.
I'm gonna have a look and change what you suggest and i'll get back with any problems

thanks again

Don't get more than 1GB of RAM. Logic/Win won't support this properly (you'll run into all sorts of weird problems).
Also, check under your audio driver tab and fool around with the "Process Buffer Range" settings.
There are 3 kinds of people:
Those who can do maths and those who can't.

TO BabyaSoftware: Freaking shut up, you dumb piece of an idiot! Your Babya Logic is the worst piece of shit ever being called "audio software" on earth!
Yeah, I had to physically uninstall my second GB because logic didn't work properly with 2GB.

thanks guys, so 1 gig will be fine then? or will i still have problems?

i was thinking of taking out one of the 256 sticks and replacing it with a 1 gig stick...totalling 1256 RAM

should i just ditch the RAM i have and replace with just a 1 gig stick instead?

thanks again

Not sure about for pc, but for mac, like others said you should turn off direct monitoring. If you have the option for a larger disk buffer, enable that. Raise your audio buffer size if need be, cuz plugins run smoother with a larger buffer. Finally, you mentioned you're on a laptop. Is your audio coming off the laptop's HD or are you using an external HD? The reason I ask is because sometimes laptop drives can't keep up with the amount of data that a DAW is trying to retrieve off them.

You don't mention whether you are using a lot of sampled instruments. If you are just recording midi and audio tracks and using a few plugins 512MB should be adequate although 1GB would be preferable.

Use Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up the Task Manager and look in the performance tab at what your RAM load is in songs where things are crapping out - you can see if you have run out of physical RAM or not. If you have hit the limit, you will need to use workarounds like bouncing sample based tracks to audio to free up some RAM.

Make sure you defrag the drive/partition your audio files/streaming samples are on too - any fragmented files will stuff up the smooth running of your song.

It's been awhile since I've used Logic but try disabling unused audio inputs and outputs. Good luck.
