I'm STOKED about this upgrade. The 64 bit engine really does sound clearer and more 3D. Reverbs and delays sound more lush and seem to trail off into eternity...
Shit, I even love the things I didn't think I would care about. Like the track icons and blue meters..the whole visual vibe. Things just flow right for me working with Sonar 5 so far.
And I just bought Melodyne Uno and Wizooverb so PerfectSpace and V Vocal haven't even gotten a fair workout yet. F'n killer program. Killer company.

...One more thing... When I read the info on Sonar5, I think I mistakenly thought they were going to consolidate a Softsynth's MIDI and Audio track in the Console and in the main-window view.

I.e. I thought that inserting a new Softsynth might AUTOMATICALLY just insert one line-item into the main-window.

Now I see that I was wrong about this. Other than track-folders, does anyone know of a good way to not have to create 2 lines per-softsynth?

Does anyone know whether they updated the functionality of the MIDI FX or just added the prettier interfaces?
A well-behaved signature.

The list of MidiFX is the same list as was there before. On the individual plugins, It looks 99% like the same controls. (I.e. if there are differences in functionality, I'm not seeing big ones).

Now one BIG difference: The MIDI ARPEGGIATOR NEVER WORKD for me when I put them in-front of any soft-synth. Now it works. So I consider that a big plus.

A question about automation.

If you automate things in midi and then decide that the tempo is wrong and change the entire songs tempo, will the automation move along with the midi or does it need to be re-done?

just tried what you're talking about. Recorded some notes then automated the volume using a knob.

When the tempo is changed, neither the notes nor the automation is adjusted. They stay the same size and duration. But this is the way it's supposed to work.
Tempo changes are supposed to slow down or speed up the existing midi data as it is, without changing it. This results in fast or slow. If the automation changed in proportion to the tempo, the speed of the music would sound the same!

Maybe I'm not getting what you mean.

It is a great update but I just have to wonder if it was necessary to dump all that junk in the registry. Seems a bit excessive.

 matter of priorities I guess...if I remember correct Sonar 4 was close to a grand for producer and 700+ for studio...that was pricey...of course my old home toilet 2002 got me a discount so I only paid 200 bux for Sonar 5...;)

I have a feeling my wife wishes I was more like you...:hihi:

 Yah, probably... IF so the repo man probably wouldnt be standing outside your house jimmying open your car door right now!

Well... In all seriousness, I just know how long I would have to be someone's slave to own the right to use Sonar 5. It would be about 10 hours for the upgrade from sonar 4. Thats kind of a big sacrifice for me. Heres why: It costs cakewalk this much to make one copy of sonar (including ALL costs).

$5 box + $1 CD + [($300,000 programmers + $20,000* promo + $50,000* Office)/copies sold]

So you guys see that the only fixed cost of software is the box and cd.. But as the amount of copies sold aproach infinity (no pun intended  ) the cost of programming and administrative costs per license sold become obscured into oblivion.

That makes the cost of production of each box =
6 + [370300/number copies sold]

How many copies do you think Will be sold of Sonar 5 15,000 copies? Which is VERY modest. That makes the actual cost of production of each box:

6 + [370300/15000] =
6 + [24.71] = $30.71 for each copy

What about 20,000 copies sold? This would be:

6 + [370300/20,000] =
6 + [18.52] = 23.52 per copy

I wouldnt be suprised if they sold well over 30,000 copies. Cake is part of a very very large worldwide company.

So your $600 software costs less than 20 bucks for them to make... Thats criminal.

*Note that these figures represent the cost of developing sonar 5 based on the allready existing sonar 4. And the administrative costs are pro-rated for the amount of work goes into developing Sonar relative the their entire product line. I asume sonar is about 1/3 the amount of product line(in terms of hours spent developing-Most the other products ARE sonar without certain features so it doesnt take that much time to DELETE code.. :) )

So although i listed administrative costs at 50,000 that is only the amount of administrative cost associated with SONAR. Its more like 200,000 at most.

According to what? Some numbers you pulled out your ass?

$300,000 for programmers - so lets get this right you think sonar is made by roughly 4 people ?

i remeber seeing a computer moosic thing ages ago (i know i knwo i was on a train) which was about NI - they had something like 30 programmers

so try your test with the budget for programmers somewhere in the milions - might look a bit less baised then
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.
