Norbet;yeah, just tried unticking mp3 in the list so now they get sent to FreeDownloadManager to download instead,not exactly what you want but it at least it gets quicktime off yer back.thanks for that,i hadn't thought of that one.it gets messy with ffox cos if you've got a download manager,you then need FlashGot,so you end up with 3 lots of programs intercepting or passing things on. my head hurts,time for beer,mmm.

If quicktime is any indicator of Apples programming prowess then its no wonder they only have 3% of the market...

Right, Quicktime sucks bigtime. It's the prime example of the almost unbelieveable stupidity of Apple's incompetent, half-witted programmers. This inane piece of sh*t is the only contact that most PC users ever have with Apple's junk. It should be a flagship program designed to generate good PR for Apple, but it's so useless and intrusive that it's hated even more than RealPlayer used to be before it cleaned up its act.

Five years into the Third Millennium, this moronic program is still incapable of working out that just because you watched a movie on CD or DVD the last time you used the program, you don't necessarily want to watch the exact same movie again from the same removable media.

As soon as you open Quicktime, it will flood the screen with stupid "DISK CANNOT BE FOUND" error messages. The only remedy for this is to clear the "recent files" menu, but this is impossible, because the Hydra-like Quicktime spawns two more error-message dialogues every time one is successfully closed (and this is so difficult to achieve that you'll think you're back on Windows 98 ).

If, after five or ten minutes, you finally succeed in closing down all the error messages without crashing XP (and Quicktime is one of the few programs that can accomplish that difficult feat with consummate ease), then you'll have to sit twiddling your thumbs for another minutes while Slowtime loads a 50 MB movie (this with 3.2 Ghz p4 and 2 GBs of RAM).

When the movie's finally loaded, Quicktime will inform you that it needs to download "Qucktime Authoring", or some such rubbish before the movie can be viewed, and when you okay this with your firewall, it'll tell you that the required software "could not be found on the server" (this is Apple's own friggin' server, remember!).

And I won't even mention Quicktime's hideously ugly interface.

In a bookshop today I saw "Mac for Dummies", and immediately thought, "Who the hell else would buy one?"

Well... I can't complain... QuickTime always been cool with this here PC user...

Although I will admit that I typically use VLC as my main media player with the exception of Winamp for mp3...

But for my browser plug-in needs, QT is a bit more reliable than VLC...

And I like to mess around with Blender occasionally and prefer to render my animations as a series of image files rather than as a proper movie; QT Pro does a good job of converting those single frames into a complete video file... Who needs Final Cut Pro when QT Pro (aka "Final Cut Amateur") works just fine!

You said "Firefox" browser, right?

Try 'Tools/Options/Downloads' menu. You can change how Firefox handles different file extensions.

THANKS. that worked for disabling quicktime (besides just removing npqtplugin.dll from the folder)... quicktime alternative has the same problems quicktime has as far as playing back audio, but right now I am using the alternative. it's a shame I will probably never get quicktime working on this machine but at least I have my 2ndary box to feed tracktor with.

I particularly loved TankGirl's on point description of the 'hydra-like' quicktime. the dam program is a public nuisance, especially given the number of media professionals who blithely post quicktime files to their websites then question *your* technical expertise when u share your difficulties with QT.

is a good firefox extention,if you've got alternative quicktime,i ticked media player classic for real player,windows media and quicktime files,then chose my fave mp3 player for playlist files.seems to kick QT out of the way.you can even point it straight to your download manager instead if you like.works so far.

OMFG... yesterday I found out that media player classic using alt quicktime won't play right, but regular windows media player works correctly playing quicktime content. With this plug I was worried because it only let me check 'windows media player classic'... altho doesn't look pretty, I got the damn thing to work on kompatk's site. too bad their purchasing won't work with firefox from what I hear, but at least I can preview tracks. w00000t!

just got 'launchy' to work. (managed to make a .xml file,i think i'd put the wrong name for the app. )cool,now i just right click,select and play.
