Seriously, I had a nifty idea for a mash-up today, and after half an hour in a host without decent time-stretching - gah! so tedious - I was beating my bloody forehead against the desk. Or is that normal procedure for mash-ups?

But then you look at this guy. I mean, he's got a bum for a head, but still he looks so happy. Puts things in perspective. :)

I expect plenty of that. In all honestly, I'm hoping the ambienters get their chance to shine. ;)

If you can make it from parts of old entries (as Scoops seems to be attempting), then more power to you!

But the "old parts" rule stands to make it an even playing field.

(And I'm all for jazz *or* jaath. ;))

SOME GENERAL ASSURANCES...

If time is an issue, remember these things:

1) Deadline is Halloween night itself, so you have an extra week.

2) It's only one minute maximum of music. And it can be less if you want!

3) Striking a mood or emotion is the most important factor. Complexity of arrangement is not a requirement. Simple is good.

4) You don't need a minute of continuous unique samples, or need to cull through hours of material. Really you could pick out a few samples (from just last month if you want) and twist them to your purposes: loop them, pitch them, filter them, reverse them. They don't have to be recognizable by the time you use them!

5) Yes, you can use your own old material. But this should be discouraged as "the easy way out", while the spirit of "challenge" should be pursued. But if you're *that* pressed for time, we'd rather have your entry with your old stuff than just bowing out.

Hopefully this can convince some of you on the fence that it's not as SCARY as you might think at first. ;)

Kind of what I was thinking.

Look, people, it's really easy . . . you pick one song with a minute of good beat. You pick another with scary sounds. You run both into a vocoder using the beat as the modulator and the scary sounds as the carrier . . . presto, scary beat made from two old songs. Throw some mangled samples over top and BOOOO! Scary mash-up.

Or at least that's what I'm thinking.

Now's the time to be buying a Kyma system. Hmmm, have I got several thousand bucks to throw away right now? D'oh!

Great contest idea I like it. Anyone can post more of their unreleased stuff in the graveyard thread? Anything to smash and mash. Vocals, drums, anything.

mmm, edit: only old contest entries

Yeah, only old stuff, but freshly rendered solo'd (and dry!) instrument/voice tracks from those are quite welcome!

Cool then. Maybe in another contest I'll submit some drumming in wav files for anybody to mangle.

I really think I may have to skip this one. Remixing is way beyond my skills. I am sure I won't be able to produce a worthwhile track. I rarely handle audio as material to comp tracks - I actually prefer not to use audio clips even with Live 5 or Sonar other than my recorded guitar parts. I honestly have no clue how to comp a decent track using only audio material. The only thing I am good at is comping midi parts with VSTis. I could cop out and perhaps try slicing up and rearranging parts. But since I don't understand how to use Fruity Slicer or BeatSlicer, I will have to resurrect pHATmatik Pro which can give great results but is completely unpredictable. :scared: And there is no way I know of to export the audio slices from PPro. Using PPro would also mean having to convert MP3s to Wav. Maybe if I understood Symptohm Mehloman I could use it that to mangle some parts but I never got past the basics of loading samples, never mind using them to generate a patch. :( Audio comping! Feh!

You don't have to use audio . . . according to the rules you can request MIDI files from the original artists as well.

OH! I missed that. Hmm. Better check out the graveyard.

What do you mean? I've been using pHATmatik PRO a lot since I switched back to PC for music-making (There, I said it.) and I haven't had any trouble. Please e-mail me if there are bugs to be fixed.

You can just drag the slices anywhere: another sampler, windows explorer, etc. (hold down alt, it's fun!)

This month's theme is great... I will be borrowing heavily from my hero, utm. :) Sadly, I never got around to posting my cover of Hugo Montenegro's 'Moog Power' last month. (But during my search for material for last months exposition, I did find a vinyl of Walter Carlos' 'Switched-On Bach' *factory sealed* in a very dusty room at the local record store.)
