In the way of making my own kicks, most of them are composite. i record them and use them as one sample. I sometimes even rip old tracks I did myself!
Never had much luck with synthesizing them, except to use them as raw material.

what Soma said - a real good dance kick in my books is always the sum of everything that's happening in the mix at that moment in my opinion.

i have this exact kick.. it's found on many a dance sample cd nowadays... and around the net in places.
sounds a bit like a bright acoustic kick drum layered up with a hard analogish thump. if ya want punch on the kick compressors are great but the pitch envelop is better i think at least on the top end of things when layering

well i do this on hardware... but i'm sure any soft sampler can do it too...
ok so take a two kick drums one with a good thump and the other, well it wont matter so much as long as it has enough high frequncy content eg: bright sounding...
layer them up, maybe even cut the top from the bassy kick with a lowpass filter, cut the bottom from the bright kick with either a band pass or high pass filter depending on what sounds best, you can use eq too just filters tend to cut chunks out that you don't need, then apply a pitch bend on it with a very sharp decay so you're raising up the bright kick and bringing it down very quickly to produce almost like a zap sound... this will give you the punch effect when combined with the thumpy sounding kick for the bass part. it's easily done if you have a pitch envelope, if say the max value is 127 raise it to about half or quater that then bring out the decay about 15 - 31ish... the trick is not to raise up the pitch too much or you really do end up with a scifi-ish/laser effect.
it's not exact science all depends on your sounds and if you do it subtle enough it works well for hard trance/hardstyle. of course eqing comp. and all the rest come into account too the main thing is to experiment as it's a lot of trial and error... just try start with the best sounds you can find then try slightly enhance them as much as you can without the end result sounding worse than the original.

reverbs work great on kicks too esp. the reverse ones.

Thanks, syncopated_silence. That technique is familiar to me (in fact, I've gotten great results using ADSR on a filter - just like with pitch - also), I just thought those asking might want clarification on those items.
