I kind of agree with bones, I was never really a music maker (i'm still slowly learning), just had ideas that the other guys sometimes translated into elements in the tunes. I was lyrics & vocals, & I can't say I really enjoyed the painstaking process of laying down vocals, doubletracking & all that & most times I personally was never really very satisfied with the results, but was powerless to an extent as I had very little technical knowledge.
But gigging, when it all came together & went right with a crowd who were feeling you - that was excellent, scary at first (my first ever live gig was live on radio one, the breezeblock & I f**ked up as well).
Adrenaline rush & all that, putting some feeling into a line & then maybe having a little rant between songs about some issue that was on my mind at the time - fuckin loved it.

being able to do things in realtime.
jamming for an hour with my computer without noticing how time passes by. and then listening through the whole thing and not noticing how time passes. and thus listening again, cause that first time just went by too fast. :D

and being able to record events instead of direct audio is a godsend, too, because else i would never feel relaxed enough just to let myself go. if i was recording to .wav/tape i'd always feel in a hurry.
It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.
-Jiddu Krishnamurti
really like the quote and some of what he has said, but did you know he had an affair with a friend's wife for years and even forced/talked her into abortion?

Post

No - I wasn't aware of that, but in a way i'm not surprised, thing i like about krishnamurti (from what little I know of his personal life gathered through reading his 'teachings') is that he never claimed to be special, perfect or any kind of leader - definately never wanted there to be a 'krishnamurtian' cult or religious following, even though blavatsky & others were obviously grooming him for that. He was just a fella with some insights on the nature of humanity, but we digress.

I think the best part is when the clear vision I had, whether composition, full production or sound, is finally there in front of me. Even if it still plays a little rough it's extremely satisfying.

Just jamming and maybe finding something as I go a long isn't half as satisfying. Unfortunately that's what I do most of the time. :help:

- Coming home from work, and listen to what I've done the night before

- Back in my chicken fistfucking days: playing a song with the band, preferably some part I have trouble getting right. The power of a loud live band is really something...

I don't need any of that krap, I don't care if anyone turns up or not, I just like the opportunity to skream my lungs out whilst the music is ridiculously loud. In fact its probably better done when there is no-one watching.

Or in a therapy session.
:hihi:
Black text on a white canvas, do racist people close their eyes when they read a book?

When I get the ideas, when the seeds just are taking off. When I know I have an idea strong enough to motivate a piece. I can relate strongly to Meffy though...

Post

when you take the same 3 chords you have played a million times before and hear the melody, arrangement and instrumentation in one glorious moment...

the bit where you get to make all sorts of cool noises ... trying to finish anything off sucks though ...

When something like this is said about your music!

For me the computer is a new instrument. I truly enjoy every aspect of it. I love to learn new instruments.

Well . . . the way I work, the sound design, composing, arranging, recording, mixing and mastering is all really going on at the same time. My favorite moment is the moment I don't even realize is happening. I'm so deep in the process that my wife will ask if I shouldn't stop and get something to eat, I mumble that I'm about to take a break . . . next thing I know she's asking again and it's 4 hours later  Or I think to myself, "That's enough for one night. I'll just finish getting this one little task done and call it quits--'bout half an hour." Next thing I know, it's 3:00 AM and I've got to go to work in 5 hours.

But seriously, I need someone's help when it comes to trying to market my work. Once a song's done, it's like I have no connection to it anymore; it's something that's no longer mine.

When I cross that threshhold between just messing around and knowing that the track is going to work.

Post

I like it all. The best part is when you finish a track and it turns out how you had it in your head.

At that moment it feels like post-coital bliss. You just wanna go out and have a drink and a smoke and bask in the glow.
