Exactly. This is a great audio editor - free - no VST, but does support DX - and has about a million file types that it can shuttle back and forth between.

'Goldwave' - is NOT free. I think it's evaluational for some time and then it stops to output audio.

Hypertone: I understand exactly what you mean.
I made a similar topic here not long ago.

There's just no such thing as a decent free(or even very cheap) audio editor, which *should* have VST support, IMO.

Audacity has (in theory) VST support, but it sucks so much that it's unuseable.

I don't understand why the situation is like this. Maybe Steinberg (Wavelab) paid Audacity developers so that they don't implement VST support on a more serious level.
Are there some legal issues that I'm not aware of?

Because then Audacity could certainly become a decent free mastering (/editing) software.
It just needs a *simple* VST-chain support with GUIs.

Is it possible to get hold of Cool Edit anymore???

No... and yes. The developer sold to Adobe, who renamed it Audition. They have also added a ton of features developing it far beyond its original sample editing features... it is now a 128-track multitrack audio recording, editing, mixing and mastering suite, complete with VST, DX and ReWire support.

It even burns your CDs for you (red book), delivers full surround sound support, and video thumbnail view. And it can be used very much like Acid for multitrack loop painting with the best timestretch you're likely to hear.

There is a 30-day (otherwise unlimited) demo here:

Although it's no longer cheap, it is certainly an investment that I can't imagine any serious musician regretting. I have tried most of what's out there, and Audition is by far the best application for audio recording/editing/etc that I have yet come across. For audio-only projects I often use it completely on its own, without involving my main host at all.

Thanks headquest but I bought AA 1.5 a while ago and sold it two months ago because I used it too rarely.

So I too am looking for a decent free VST capable audio editor.

Like Greg I use my host for most of the work but Ableton Live is not useful for detailed audio editing. I have Audacity but could also benefit from VST chains.

Wow, I'm surprised you did that because as you say Live is not always the best place for detailed audio editing. I find they are a great combination personally. Good luck finding something suitable that's free/cheap though!

Wow = surprised again!

... is that legal?

@ BONES:

I agree with pretty much everything you say there, and in fact mastering here is much like you do it on most tracks in practice. It depends on the plugins I have available, and the quality of the mix I've done. Often when I open up the redered .wav in Audition there is very little for me to do to it...

...so like you I then simply use Audition to normalise/maximise/convert the file and dither. Sometimes I use a few other specific tricks in Audition - (stereo enhancement, for example) - , because I feel that it's built in effects are about as good as they get (I've compared several of them alongside Waves, etc, and I'm very impressed with Audition!).

It's a 'trial' or something similar.

Perhaps using it leads to a "trial" if Adobe hear about it

For me it was a matter of money vs need. I sold it to buy a new mic. :)

So it does. It leads to a page telling you to buy Audition
That one leads to a site where you can buy the old Cool Edit Pro for $299. The price of the latest Audition is not much more than that

Just to summarize the options:

- Acon Acoustica
- Audacity
- Goldwave
- Magix Audio Studio 2005 (e-version)
- Sony Sound Forge Audio Studio

I got Acoustica myself. I was leaning towards Sound Forge Studio but it didn't support 24-bit. I use Sonar and Acoustica works fine with Cakewalk's VST-DX adapter. The plugin chainer still has some bugs but technical support is good so they will be eventually fixed.
