Greetings All,

I have a project that would sound great with the addition of a few mallet cymbal swells and am looking for a way to achieve them.

I am using Sampletank 2 XL but can't seem to find any samples that sound like this using Sampletank's built in search. I also did a quick Google search and a search of KVR forums.

I am wondering how you guys achieve this sound. Do you trigger a sample or program a midi part? And if you use sampletank how do you go about this?

I also have Sonic Reality's Studio and Eclectic Drum libraries.

Any advice would be much appreciated

Steve :)

Well, we do have cymbal swells on something. I forget which at the moment. Miroslav Philharmonik has them I believe. We'll make sure we get some SR mallet rolls up on the downloadable sounds of www.esoundz.com (goal is to be a resource for anything you might need at any time of the day or night... like when you're in a session and go "oh, man I need this!").

However, here is a trick for simulating cymbal rolls. The tricky part about a real cymbal roll is that the harmonics start off dark and build up with the multiple vibration and increased velocity of the mallets. So, if you take a fatter sounding cymbal to start with and clamp the filter down then turn up the velocity to filter a bit this might help. You might want to play around with the amp envelope attack and release a bit as well. You want to kind of smooth it out and let it bleed within itself to mask it sounding obvious that it is a sample being retriggered. In fact, you can also find another cymbal that is close in timbre and do a left/right stick switching for the roll's build up (the new drum series we have coming has that designed from the start... you guys are going to love it).

Hope that helps!

Sonik Synth 2 has cymbal swells in it's orchestral battery. I use it all the time.
