Agreed-- while I'm not necessarily FULLY on the "a guitar and amp along can give you the sustain you need" wagon (I think sustainers have a use, but it's a specialized effect, not something for constant use), I agree that with the right amp ang guitar, finding the right spot (the Santana method. ;) ) will allow your guitars to sympathetically vibrate... or in other words, the very waves coming out of the speakers are "playing" the strings because the strings 'want' to vibrate at that same frequency.

Sympathetic vibration is the best kind of sustain you can get, but it's not always easy to achieve on-demand, which is why there are devices like the Fernandez or Sunstainiac. Ebow, at least back in the day, took a few moments to 'kick in', which was actually part of its appeal, but limited its usability for certain applications.

On Project Guitar, there's a 70-page thread (or so, I'm just guessing, but it IS super-huge) dedicated to homebrewed 'sustainer' systems.

Note that unless you have a 'device', you won't get sympathetic feedback by tracking your guitar with headphones on. ;)

Too true.
Btw, I remember testing a Boss pedal once, some feedbacker (too lazy to look it up), it wasn't all that bad, almost like the real deal on certain settings, the good thing being that it doesn't require modifying your guitar(s).

Thinking about it, there's some reverbs (such as Ambience) and delays, allowing for a "freeze" thing. Could probably be interesting to make that footswitchable.
Maybe I'm gonna give it a try in eXT or so later on...

Great idea. Ambience's "hold" button would be insane for guitar, if controlled by foot! Unfortunately, I can't test it myself, but I'd like to know what you come up with.

Hm, would have to reroute my sustain pedal it seems. Or get out the good old MIDI foot pedal controller and assign one program for on, another for off..
Ah well, later, gonna do some other things right now (GF is finally moving into my place, wish me luck :))

At least I'm not alone with that opinion...
I agree! This reminds me of who I should have posted on that "overrated" thread...

There was an overrated thread? Santana definitely ranks up in there. Same licks over and over and over again.

I like his tone, I actually DO like his licks... but over and over again? And always interjected in there every single time the singer's not singing (and even sometimes when they are)?

It gets very tiresome, even if I DO concede he has some semblance of talent.

Agreed. I think he may be more talented as a composer/collaborator/band leader than a guitarist, actually.

never tried it, but I have actually heard a lot of good reviews on it.

personally I always thought he would be the perfect replacement for Jerry Garcia in the Dead...

Yeah, totally! Super-snooze-Group!

That Sustainer Kit looks interesting, but that website is unreadable! Bleah! Too bad, they'll lose a lot of sales with a site like that.

I'm currently thinking of going for this deal at http://www.monteallums.com/Product_links.html (scroll down to Boss CS-3). For $20 they an upgrade your Boss pedals to these crazy-ass quality tones! Check it out, axemen.

It's actually got me doing some thinking...I hadn't thought about it for a while until today, thanks to this thread... :dog:

Wow, that's exactly my sentiments!
On all the latest records he's ALLWAYS noodling whenever there's even the slightest chance for it - and yes, sometimes even when you'd think there isn't.
I like his tone too, also, the earlier Santana live lineup has got to be one of the most energetic and groovy bands ever, plus there's some nice albums... but IMO he's pretty much lost track over the years.

that pedal mod looks cool...but the only two pedals I have are an old super chorus, I don't want that touched...and my sanamp gt2...

For Fernandez sustainer enthusiasts-- the real killer of the deal for me is that the driver replaces the neck pickup. Putting another single-coil right next to it won't work for reasons I'm not capable of explaining, but the point is that no neck pickup.

I live for the neck pickup. :D

well it definitely would be for a specialty guitar...but I do have a place for it (not on my warmoth), might be interesting...
