Yeah, you could probably just get some bitchin' high-end (active?)pickups put in instead for more sustain. I just got my stock fender middle pickup replaced and man, what a difference.Lunch Money wrote:For Fernandez sustainer enthusiasts-- the real killer of the deal for me is that the driver replaces the neck pickup. I live for the neck pickup.

I use EMGs the 81 is a rockin bdige pick-up... my warmoth has an 89 in the neck as well, which is just an 85 with a coil tap...my Esp had an 85 but I put in a Duncan Distortion for an expiriment.bduffy wrote:Yeah, you could probably just get some bitchin' high-end (active?)pickups put in instead for more sustain. However I also have a Kramer Ritchie Sambora that has three humbuckers (Duncans)...the guitar played well and I used it for years. Now it's completely taken apart after doing a fret job on it...I've been putting off leveling those frets for a couple years...I wonder if I could replace the middle humbucker with the sustainer

Yeah i agree with all of u about Santana. Anyway i guess u were right about the compressor being no use when distorion is used. And noise gate is no good. its just destroying the natural decay, and defeats the use of a compressor in any case...btw, am i doing right if i put delay after distortion and then Amp simulator, or shud it go b4 all these?

btw bduffy...you might wanna try the PA2 by EMG, it's a pre-amp switch (easy to install) with up to 20db gain...it has a trim pot to set how much gain you want...it's 30 bux, you can spend 50 and get an Afterburner by EMG the is close to the same, but it's a push/pull pot and the pot allows you to adjust the gain...here's a good site for EMGS and other stuff...for pre amps look under accessory circuts...

and gys do u use a pre-amp b4 inputting the guitar signal into the computer 4 VST?
EDIT:Sorry 4 reposting

Hink: there's a reason the driver is in the neck position. It has to do with the physical properties of the vibrating string at that position. I'm not sure that in the middle position it'd drive the strings properly. The vibration "arc" is possibly too tight at that point? I don't know. On the other hand, when you get high up on the frets, it should theoretically work BETTER in the middle position.
It might also have to do with the surrounding magnetic fields. In the neck, the only "interfering" field comes from the middle pickup, but if the sustainer's in the middle it would have magnetic fields on either side.
Combined with 2 low-magnet active pickups, it might just work, though!

Well, I don't know - are all of these FX VST? If so, I'm not sure why you're using distorion and an Amp Sim, because the amp sims usually have their own fuzz. If you're using the amp sim to get speaker tone, then I'd put fuzz b4 the amp sim, but that could lead to a pretty muddy tone. So:apakhira wrote:Yeah i agree with all of u about Santana. Compressor -> Distortion -> Amp Sim.
And it's always best to have a preamp, IMHO! You'd want to plug your guitar into it before hitting your sequencer.

Ah, but not all Amp sims DO have their own fuzzbox-type thing. Nothing like putting a simmed Octavia (BuzOct) or Tube Screamer (Simulanalog) in front of your amp.
Putting a -transparent- compressor AFTER the amp isn't always bad, either, depending on what you're doing. If your distortion isn't uber-thick, you can still have lots of peaks that need taming.
In terms of using it for sustain, it DOES make more sense to put the compressor first.

Yeah, thanks, I forgot to add to the end of mine that that was just an idea, you should just f*ck around with the order and plugs until you get something you want. I put compressors before/after/sideways all the time. Depends on the material.Lunch Money wrote:Ah, but not all Amp sims DO have their own fuzzbox-type thing. Agreed, love the CS-3. I don't know if it necessarily makes it sound "clearer", though...increasing the Tone knob, you mean?arke wrote:If you want sustain? Boss Compression Sustainer. Hands down, the best you can get. Makes the guitar sound alot clearer too.

For my slightly larger live setup I'm sometimes using a compressor after the preamp stage.bduffy wrote: Compressor -> Distortion -> Amp Sim.
I'm fooling around a lot with the volume pot to vary the amount of distortion and the compressor helps keeping my overall level up.
But as said, that's just a live solution (and using real amps).
I usually don't need any compression in front of any distortion or preamp gain for overdriven sounds as my guitars are all sustaining pretty good...
