I have a ton of samples from old horror movies that are public domain now, but I sampled from DVDs, so I don't know if they are legal to use, don't want to be sued because of a 'technicality'. I emailed the company that makes the box sets 2 weeks ago and I didn't get a response yet.
So the company is Treeline Films, they make box sets of up to 50 horror, comedy, classic tv, war movies. Most of these are public domain movies. But if they may have the mechanical copyright(?) on these. Yes or no?
Answer my question and convince me it's legal, and I will upload all my samples from the movies.

If the material is public domain, then that means that the copyright has expired. In this case, there is no legal issue with re-distribution.

So if you're sure its public domain, then there is no problem. However, there is alot of controversy about what is and what isnt public domain. So I would check with the publishing company first (if you want to be 100% sure). Make sure that they realise that you arent selling the DVD's though, as there may well be protection on this (not sure how copyright works on visuals).

Hey, and make it snappy, as I would love to get my mits on those samples!

Cheers!

all of the movies I have I looked up with http://www.reelmediainternational.com/search.htm
all except 2 were listed there, and I googled the other titles to find out. 50 public domain horror movies from 1920-1975. I'll upload them now.

OT: I take it from you're name you are into a bit of electronic mangling? I know nothing about circuit bending but I would love to give it a blast. Any suggestions on getting started (Im not interested in purchasing already tweaked designs)?

go to my site www.necrosensual.com and browse there. Check out the links pages. Beware of Reed Ghazzala(hippy), and Bent Monkey Cage(Ebay peddler).

Heres the very large file: http://www.necrosensual.com/movies.rar (31.1MB)

I'll keep it there until sunday. This is just what I've gone through so far, less than half.

He may have invented it, but this is not an alien science like he would like you to think it is. This is just hardware hacking with a different name and different application.

So? He's having a bit of fun with the concept, what's so terrible?

EDIT : Anyways, you link to his site yourself, and other 'ebay peddlars', so I dont get your post/comments/attitude/whatever at all.

I didn't really want to fight about this, I should have written IMO, after hippy. I just find that his site is the first newbs are refered to, and is the least helpful. IMO!

I take it you are a circuitbender too?
Can I see some of your work?

Not a fight, just confusion. I see certain threads of 'politics' on the Benders list, and never really got the point of the divisions, thassall.

I've been known to, although the only finished project I could point you at is in the hands of vurt.

Y'can hear it though.
