hop hip? i like k-os quite a bit, and aesop rock is totally sick. that's the two current ones that come to mind, but of course 'paul's boutique' and 'check yo' head' by beasties are two of the greatest hip hop records of all time.

can't disagree with any of that. k-os is great (his keyboard player replaced me on a recording my old band made when i left (and that guy can play circles arond me). k-os is a great song writer. as for monk, of course - awesome. and the beasties, "check your head" is awesome from start to finish and "paul's boutique" definitely has it's moments (good old dust brothers). i'm really likin the "ill comunication" and "hello nasty" as well.

it's that new beastie album that kinda really sucks. it's funny because the prodigy joked about how the new beasties album sucked and the new prodigy kinda sucks as well (except for a few decent tracks like girls and spitfire etc...).

point is, don't write your whole new album with reason people (like they both did). use it for drums maybe, just don't write a whole album with that gui (it's great and all as a sketch pad) but it makes people lazy. stick with cubase/logic/craption/pt/performer/live/even fls/whatever

On the question of sport (haha) I would say it is ALL overrated.

Ooh, I go with this one. It's one thing for people with families to feed buying overpriced memorobilia for questionable (overrated) talent (one good song out of a dozen chances per album), but to paint your face with a team's colors and go out in public is to lose what little grasp one might have on what really matters. We need social ridicule more than ever.

i like beastie boys "cookie puss", i was reminded of the tune when i heard some people commenting about cookie puss on the radio, i guess it's some kind of cookie available in NYC, i mentioned it in the bass line thread, no one has apparently heard of it...best bass line (including 'sabotage') and tune by the beasties, but i only heard it a couple times...

i can understand disliking reason on principle, but what's the beef with "craption"? "P.U base" came with "EM-EEouuoooseeyoulatorX", and it was pretty toy like, if they were trying to gather converts, they sure failed with me (it was the LE version, maybe the SX stuff is better)...i really like "CRAP2", it's easy and it works...


as far as Bird vs. Trane, i choose TRANE....Charlie Parker may have been the innovator, but Coltrane took it so much further, it's like Clapton vs. Hendrix....

it's not so much that Wilco is bad, but their fans? i saw Wilco on Soundstage w/ Sonic Youth including Jim O'Rourke on bass (that dude opened for ME...TWICE!!!! as true as it is, it's meaningless, it's just the circumstances and me trying to be silly/name dropping)...anyway, Wilco has the hands-down dorkiest fans ever, they all look like grad students and advertising account supervisors, the only cute chicks are mousey/sweater wearing/arms crossed/ waiting for their dorky grad student/account executive BF's to stop embarrassing them with their lame attempts at "rocking out" so they can go home and call their sister/mom/best friend since junior high/etc about the latest episode of Desparate Housewives...

i got the chance to visit the old stomping grounds of Wilco/Son Volt/Uncle Tupelo, and they are incredibly cutting edge and groundbreaking for the area they come from (Bellville, IL/St. Louis)..i can see why hip hop has become so big with not only black kids, but white kids as well... in that area it is so friggen bland, boring, pedestrian, void of culture, and isolated...you know, it's kind of like where i live now.....except way cooler!

i wasn't bad mouthing traktion, i was telling people to use it or any other host other than reason (which isn't even a host really). i just called it craption because that's what some people call it around here (like tarnce i guess) (just being loser)

Hi all.

Saw a couple of pages back that a lot of folks thought Nirvana was overrated. Someone even mentioned that Kurt was a "functional idiot". Well if you ask me, I’d say that even if that’s true, just one listening of the “watershed” Never Mind album is enough to convince anyone that the man had the ability to write catchy tunes and sound discontent at the same time. Man, there are some nifty tunes on that disc. Although it was pointed out in this thread that he didn’t write all the songs himself, the fine print on my copy says he did.

Sure, production-wise they may have been a little lost till Butch Vig came in to add that commercial Grunge sheen to the guitars and the overall sound, but that disc does have some great tunes. Looking back, I get the feeling that it wasn’t Nirvana, but the entire Grunge thing that was overrated. The only other decent band to emerge from the so-called movement was Stone Temple Pilots. And Soundgarden, if they are considered to have been a part of that scene. But of course, this is just my personal opinion.

Also, any such specilised “movement” becomes overrated when it has the marketing depts. rather than talent behind it. Such a situation makes the whole thing sub-average, but overrated.

Listening to an album a while after all the hype and excitement surrounding it has died down always helps to put it in proper musical [and NOT cultural, sociological or historic] perspective. I think Nirvana’s Never Mind album puts up well to this test.

I thinking people dissing the new prodigy album is overated...I've listened to it far to much to think it's crap...and I don't care on what f**king host they wrote it with!!!(But from an interview I read, most of the basslines were replaced with analog synths...) Alright, its not as dark sounding as fat of the land....it's definatly more "music for a jilted generation" sounding. My only regret is that I'll have to wait another 7 years for a good prodigy album.

I'm sticking with Ozzy Osbourne with being overated. His solo shit that is...

Not that I don't like him. He's one of my favourite producers, and he's made a lot of great stuff. But he's not nearly as good as critics paint him to be. I found his Caustic Window and Polygon window releases mostly mediocre.
