well, vst burnout is one thing... but quite often keeping up with threads and people on the internet is even worse. makes communication seem really tiring and useless... the same arbitrary opinions amplified a thousand times, and there's no end to it, unless you end it.

i have been deleting vsti's and vst's from my harddrive, too, recently. and am still in the process of getting rid of at least 50 more, once i find out what they actually do... .... ;)

There is a solution to this "Too many things - I can't
handle it!!" fatigue.

If you feel that you're getting out of hand and not producing anything musical - just stroking the keys so to speak. Well the secret to stopping that, is as follows:

Additive Synths
Acoustic Pianos
Electronic Pianos
Formant-Vowel
Frequency Modulation
Hybrid Synth
Organs
Phase Distortion
Physical Modelling
ROMpler
Subtractive
Wavetable

All that you do is sub-divide all your synths into these
groups, and then go through each folder and familiarise yourself with each synth's SOUND.
After that period is over you can start imagining sounds
in your head and saying "Well I've got Atmosphere, that will do excellent as my middle ethereal section...." and
so on.

When you know what timbres the gear produces you can start assembling the information in your head and getting a more complete picture as to what you want to do and where you want everything to go.

Hope it helps!!

Heh heh! Some great responses.

I must say that Radek's reply pretty much sums up how I felt when I submitted this thread...

My VST folder, indeed my PC itself is very sparse, I have become very disaplined in that department. I really do feel that I can and do sound as good as anyone else with a bunch of quality free VSTi's and FX

I do have an academic interst in the latest developments hence why I hang out at places like this, but I do tend to think that a lot of the hype surrounding the industry is a case of the Emperor’s new clothes'...

I also fully agree with Kriminal's comment too btw! ;)

And then there's simply keeping track of the updates for plug-ins. You know, version 2.0.0.34 instead of version 2.0.0.33 -- "the knobs now turn in both directions" or something like that. I guess the author or developer is trying to do the right thing, but the time involved in managing this stuff becomes seemingly endless when there are lots of plug-ins in the folder.

This whole thread reminds me of an interview to Joan Jett I once read.
She was asked what would be the best advice she could be to up-coming songwritters. She replied "Keept it simple you idiot!"
She is not the greatest songwritter (depending on who you ask I guess) but the older I get I find it she is right about that. A simple idea presented in the simplest way is usually the best way.
As for the ease of use that software is showing more and more frequently. I think that is a result of users instead of techheads writting the programs.
Techs have a tendency to think that "the harder the program is to learn, the more pro-like it becomes" a musician writting a music program like Energy XT, Orion, Tracktion or FL has a better grasp of what such program should do and how it should be done.
Just my 2 cents I guess.

And now the old giffer mobiles are the "in" thing - big keys for blind bastards like myself and no silly frills. I needn't have bothered learning the stupid skill. My new one even has the decency to display what my number is on the screen - for 4 years I also didn't previously know what my own fcuking phone number was after I threw awway the packaging and blurb crap.

When they sell mobile phones, I stupidly assumed that was what I was buying - a phone that I could carry about - not bloody Hal9000 on batteries. :x

I don't have one yet -- but similarly, really all I want is one that is just a phone, with a flip-top and nicely designed -- I guess that makes me an Anti-Convergencist
Still...all this technology seems to do is to allow terminal fuckwits to phone home at the supermarket to ask what brand of cornflakes everyone likes. They need to phone home to know that crap?

"Hi, I just phoned to tell you I'm about to go into the cinema"..."fcuk off"

"Oh hi...thought I'd phone you to let you know what a great restaurant this is"..."piss off and socialise with your fellow eaters you unsociable dickhead"

"Hi, thought I'd phone you from 30,000 feet because it's really amusing the way it interferes with the navigation systems"..."learn to entertain yourself for more than 2 seconds you imbecile"
it's bad enough that people have been driving around in motor vehicles with their attention completely elsewhere, but now there's this fad of the hands-free phone, which leads some people to make completely incongruous and sometimes provocative comments out of the blue as they pass you in the hall! :x

but as for music software, something I would like to see more often is an auto-update feature (yeah yeah, I know many people have their working DAW offline) -- i.e., there could be a "check for and install updates" link in the help menu of the host or the "back panel" that so many plugins have -- and if possible, to update the host's plugin database without requiring a complete rescan -- maybe there could be an option to check for updates upon loading the host or plugin

of course I do appreciate the continuing refinement of their products by various companies, small and large, but as eduardo_b mentioned, it's getting more difficult to keep up with the updates

Well dont count on buying that hardware sequencer to far in the future because i really do think it will ALL be on computers..

BTW, why dont they wright sequencers for simple folk like you? Ones where you have to go plug in note after note tediously. Oh wait they do - trackers! Thats what you need then, a very simple tracker.
The following statement is true.
The previous statement is false.

Hello Mr.USERNAMELONGERTHANANYIVEEVERSEEN :D

I'm very happy with my current sequencing setup.. I havent upgraded it for a very long time but that's thru choice rather than circumstance.

You're probably right about the hardware sequencers, although I believe Korg and Roland are still active in the 'workstation' and 'Groovebox' departments.. (I'm sure I saw some Korg contraption with valves in it a while ago..?)

Tracking is one of those things I whish I'd learned. I remember them back in the day, my mate had one for his Amiga. I just remember being totally confused by rows of numbers wich looked anything but 'simple'...

However, the all-in-one type approach was probably a hint to the future back in 1991, cos many of us work exclusively inside computers nowadays...

But no, I don't think I'll be learning Trackers any time soon, I like to play music in to the computer via my trusty Roland PC200mkII ;)

HI

Going back 16 years: 1xAmiga + 20 8 bit 1/2 meg sample floppies + a sampling 8 bit cartrige (which I could sample records on to - about 10 seconds? worth a disk)- I was churning out LOADS of tracks!

My productivity has fallen big time .... oh, but the quality of 16 bit though!

Now I have gigabyte upon gigabyte of sample library and countless vst's - I must admit though, stuff I do now tends to just 'happen' around whatever vst/sample that I start with: it's almost like for all the choice - I simply browse a few sounds or pre-sets and go with what is at hand, rather than worrying about the vast selection that is at available - don't know if this is a good way of even scraping the surface of what I have, but at least it means I don't spend a week looking for a bass sound!

Flipper.
