man, i missed this thread. i read bits and pieces of it, so please pardon any repeats.
there are a couple of free vst racks out there so you can chain. maybe some one can point the way
i mainly use tracktion for audio editing. for final recordings i use quartz audio free cause i don't have to worry about sync (most the time). i also use audacity to remove noise and convert

This probably isn't very relavant, but I'll post it anyway.
One of my favorite things about the Cool Edit noise reduction (and I'm pretty sure this is in Audition, too) is the "Fill Single Click" button inside the Click/Pop Eliminator menu. Highlight any sort of single click, press that button, and POOF!, it's gone! No artifacts if it's done properly.
I'm archiving and restoring an old radio show, and this feature is invaluable for cleaning up noisey and clumsy tape edits.

Since Acoustica support DirectX-plugs you can just use a VST-wrapper plug, and run any VST inside that.Hypertone wrote:I tried Audacity and Acoustica. Audacity doesn't support plugin chaining (or I couldn't figure out how), so basically you apply one effect at a time destructively. Not really usable for the way I do things.
Acoustica demo looked nice, I liked the interface and the price, but there is no vst support.
And it's really good for mastering too. I like to just mark an area, open the plugin, preview result and the marked section playes over and over again. It's really easy to here changes when you change settings in the plugins then.

the latest version of audacity has many improvements, but has also a bad thing : it doesn't support vst gui anymore !!
Acoustica is sexy (well priced too), but i don't rely much on vst/dx wrappers... So a new version with stable vst support at the same price or so would make me buy it on hte fly.

To the best of my knowledge, Audacity never did show the gui of a VST...sinkmusic wrote:the latest version of audacity has many improvements, but has also a bad thing : it doesn't support vst gui anymore !!

I'm running VST wrapper all the time with Sonar and their own wrapper. No problems at all.sinkmusic wrote:the latest version of audacity has many improvements, but has also a bad thing : it doesn't support vst gui anymore !!

You are tying up your own hands on your back.
There are another free wrapper too, that I have not tried. I know some people use Directiser(or what it's called, not free though). It supports some automating features from synth plugins if you change synth settings in realtime.
I think there is trial period for acoustica and free wrapper. It's very easy to just test it.
I will try and find my bookmark for the free one.
EDIT: Here it is:

DX Lite is a free version that fixes one VST.
