After owning an MP3 player for some time, seeing "This disc contains Copy Control technology" becomes disappointing. I was recently excited about a new release but didn't buy it at a certain retailer because it displayed this label...

So a few days later I saw the same CD for a few more dollars containing just an FBI Anti-Piracy label, so I bought it. I could load it up into my MP3 player and all was good, but now I'm wondering is it now a common practice having labels releasing a copy controlled CD in one store and then having it another way at another? (say a supermarket type store versus a music only "record store.")

this is such a piss off. i can't stand buying a cd that i can't freely put on an mp3 player. what's the point in having an mp3 player then? what if your hard drive get's messed up? at least if you have a hard copy of a typical music cd, you can back all of your tracks up. but if all music cds are now copy controlled and you're forced to just buy mp3s, you can get screwed.

you can burn cd copies with all of your mp3s you bought but burned cds aren't as reliable as a CD you buy in the store. then you just payed a bunch of money for nothing because all of your music is then gone. Also, some copycontrolled cds, there can be a loss in audio quality (when i bought the latest chemical brothers cd, it sounded like ass in my cd player but it sounded fine in other cd players). why copy control a cd. those who are going to pirate your music will do it anyways. instead of fukin it all up for the rest of us, just go after all of those newsgroups (some of which, charge admission for you to download tons or pirated material). please, anyone who has any power in a record company (like EMI- who copy control methods really mess up audio quality and make life inconvenient for law abiding customers), stop this copy conrtol bullshit.

because of all of this EMI copy control measures, i am almost tempted to get all EMI music in the future for free from newsgroups because you can't guarantee that the CD you buy in the store will let you put the stuff on an ipod or whatever and the CD just might sound like ass in my CD player. so go to hell EMI

I have not purchased a single EMI product since the day the Harry Fox first tried to shut down OLGA. I've stopped counting the years, but I think I've been on this boycott for a decade, or almost. Maybe more, I don't care. It's their loss, maybe they should be the ones keeping track.

I should not have called it "boycott". I don't care how much money they get. The only thing that matters to me, is that they are getting none of mine.

Any copy controlled (or copy protected) CD can't actually be called a Compact Disc. Philips (one of the co-creators of the CD) recently started a lawsuit to prevent a large record label from calling their product compact discs.

Philips' logic is that any disc that implements any form of copy inhibition will potentially cause CD players to not play the disc which could cause people to return their CD player hardware.

So, look for the Compact Disc logo before buying any CD. If anyone claims to sell you a "Compact Disc" and that disc contains copy protection, you have grounds for returning it due to false advertising.

I was going to rip a track from the last APC cd "Emotive" when I got a message that there was some kind of copy control software that would be loaded on my computer. PHUCK THAT!! Sx 3 read the disc fine and I imported the track I wanted without a problem and without adding their software.

Well, at least they told you it would be loaded on your computer.
The malware that came with my M83 CD didn't even tell me. I found out after my computer went all funky[1], right-click wouldn't work, programs would randomly crash, I couldn't select anything anymore, &c.
The task manager showed a "player.exe", ending the task didn't help.

My regular CD player is b0rked, I can only play CDs on my computer and affordable stand-alone players are very, very rare these days (where I live at least), so I guess I'm glad that it's only one CD in my collection that I can't play anymore.
Just say no to copy protection,

I have 2 copy controlled cds but i managed to extract them perfectly with easy cd extractor. http://www.poikosoft.com/

I don't f@ckin care if this is illegal or not because i bought these cds and i can store them wherever i want!!!
