Hi!

Folks, I need your help again. I'm working on a vocal production at the moment where the recording is fairly muddy and noisy. So I have/had to do a lot of editing to clean up the recorded material.

The problem is... I don't have that much in terms of cleaning on my disposal. The Wavelab stuff is pretty much "crap" (if I may say so, only a de-crackler, de-esser, and the de-noiser didn't do anything at all either). So I tried some other VST stuff like "Bias SoundSoap" and Waves Restauration Plugins like X-Noise. And this is where my problem is.

Bias greatly dissapointed me and pushes more noise or the typical "tin can sound" into the recording than enything else. Waves is awesome but I really can't affort just 4 plugins for 1200USD.

So my question is now... are there alternatives?
Especially ones where I can say "okay learn noise, then apply it with a certain treshhold and ratio" like the X-Noise does. Best if there're restauration plugins bundles for a pretty affordable price (or free, doesn't matter).

I NEED A GOOD AND FREE GATE! The ones in Wavelab/Cubase aren't really much helpful either.

If you post a 20 second sample there are many of us that could give you some opinions about the right tool(s) for the job!

I think WaveLab also comes with Spectralizer - in your VST menu?
I usually reach for this to put the snazz back in pizazz.

Find your frequency, density, and mix pretty well - and things get crispy FAST!

Sony (Use to be Soundforge) noise reduc has a learn section and sounds pretty good.. Can you do Frequency Domain Editing?

Adobe Audition has the same noise reduction aproach as Sony, you take a spectral "snapshot" of the noise alone, then use the hiss or noise reduction tools to inversely apply that snapshot on the whole wave.

Bias soundsoap is crap! it kills the sound.

Here's a small demo of that I mean in terms of cleaning up recordings:

The RAW file is the original recording how I got it, and the "in arrangement" is how I cleaned it up with a handful of tools (among it X-Noise) and tried to push it into the arrangement.

I just need something similar as X-Noise for an affordable price. Prefered is VST cause I can work more in "realtime" here rather than rendering, then realising "doesn't fit", redoing the stuff over and over just to realise again "doesn't fit either", etc.

Audacity (now adobe Audition afaik, or was that Cool Edit?) also muds up the sound like SoundSoap (tried that with other recordings too), so it's a "no" for that too. And I forgot to mention that I use Wavelab 4.

I guess going deeper with the noise reduction will hurt this recording. I hear mic has much self noise (in mid to mid-high range which is not ambient noise and is hard to remove). If you wanted to remove this 'mic' noise, it's simply impossible as this noise can be described as 'broken' harmonics - i.e. it's a part of the sound - you may only equalize them.

Hm... that's about the same as I got out from X-Noise (a tad more dull, but interesting, thanks). And yeah, the mic is crap. The original recording was done on a (hold yer horses) "Macintosh iBook" microphone. So I had to do a lot of editint to get the sound you hear in the "In arrangement".

Anyway... does Voxengo offer a kind of "Restauration Package" (like declick, dehum, denoise, etc), Mr. Vaneev? Cause if so I'll definitely look into that.

Somebody else who can recommend me "restauration" tools that're not necessarily over 500USD each? As mixer without a job it's a bit difficult to get good tools for cheap.

And yeah... still I'm looking for a good, free gate (why didn't Kjaerhus make one, now that I think about it).

There is Voxengo Redunoise (broadband noise reduction tool) available only - no other 'standard' tools like de-clicker.

Yeah, that might be a good idea. Anyway, that requires some algorithms in the first place, so I can't just 'start' this set.
