You know, musicians that you adore but seemingly nobody else you know knows anything about. I'll start with a couple of my recent favs:

Matthew Sweet : great power-popster.

Curt Boettcher : 60's producer/songwriter with a great voice and some heavenly melodies+production values.

Alabama 3

seems no bastard has ever heard of them! mention the sopranos of course and they go "oh ye heard that". I've known a few folk gone straight out and ordered all the albums after I've introduced them. amazing live and the gigs all sell out and stuff but they just don't get exposure. too odd for mainstream maybe?

The Van Pelt - achingly beautiful emo/powerpop

Suzanne Vega - well, everybody knows of her, but her albums are just wonderful

Life Without Buildings - only ever did one album, but what an album!! Shambolic jangle, but very very sweet

Cap'n Jazz - once again only one album (plus a load of singles and eps) but supercute powerpop

@Trist - Dinosaur Act by Matthew Sweet rules totally

Alabama 3 are hardly obscure, they have a copy of 'Exile on Coldharbour Lane' in my local Public Library.

agreed. but nobody I speak to has heard of them. hence my mentioning them. if the original poster meant "obscure even to those with wide musical knowledge" then I missed the mark and apologise.

in my experience a public library CD section is mostly comprised of obscurities!
