Here are my picks:

1. Reaktor 5 - (covers almost every kind of synthesis you could want)
2. Absynth - (great for ambient fill and evolving pads)
3. FM7 - (best FM synth IMO... haha btw I'm not trying to be NI biased here)
4. Z3ta - (Better than rhino, albino, blue, and vanguard in my opinion. Great for arpeggiated rhythms and leads)
5. Attack/Microtonic - (Because you need good drum vstis and personally don't like to use samples)

Honorable mention - Tera2 (I think this is most comparable to absynth in it's versatility. I could easily see this topping absynth in it's sonic potential. Also, the inclusion of a sequencer makes it an outstanding synth. My major gripe with tera is the CPU usage)

I dont think anybody can reliably answer this question. I dont think that many have bothered programming presets for all these synths.. We say 'fm7 is best' when we ignore things like Max Claster Toxic, White Noise Zero Vector, Linplug Cronox, DR008 and NI Carbon (that came with keys magazine)..

Saying that, I guess you can include the whole NI Electronic Instruments vol 2. aswell, with Photone etc!!

I bet you most people haven't even skimmed the surface of the capabilities of these great synths yet..

And I just love the free synthedit made EVOL aswell.. Such smooth housey chords can be made on that.

Im gonna list freeware as the person who asks such a question would typically just open up a p2p program and search for them to d/l.

im using "-" instead of numbers because i wouldnt put any of these plugs over another. Also im listing ten because 5 is just too hard.
