i'm amazed, Bones, that you were able to master tracks on MA-10s... are you actually a mastering engineer, or bedroom producer? (no offense intended by that question, btw) because i don't know one mastering engineer that would even think of working on little speakers like that - and it's not just the volume they put out, its the amps they can handle, the frequencies they reach, the STN ratio, maximum SPL, and a zillion other things. they may sound good to your ears, much like a car stereo can get tuned to sound good, but it still doesnt mean your frequences are getting represented right. i'm amazed you can produce on those things! there is no bass whatsoever, just a general 100hz "presence."

So you would wonder how anyone produced anything 20 years ago. What is the point of doing it at all if not to end up with something that sounds good to your ears? I certainly don't think that the top mastering engineer that our label paid to master our first album did a significantly better job than I could have done but, at the time, the label weren't confident with the raw mixes we had sent them. Second time around it was a different story and they decided to put that money into promotion instead.
I've never been into the technical aspect of things at all - music is an emotional thing and I do it all via that conduit. I don't look at waveforms or spectrums or any of that shit, except where I can't avoid it [in Cool Edit 2000]. I just listen to it and decide if its good enough. I have some good hi-fi speakers that I can use for confirmation but I am usually 100% confident without firing them up.

there are Hyundais, and there are BMWs. in the same way, there are Edirols and Behringers, and there are Dynaudios and Genelecs. i'll say it again, you get what you pay for. and you'll never know the differences until you A/B these things.

I have my hi-fi for enjoying music, my MA-10's are for the tortuous task of making it. As long as I know how to use them, it really doesn't matter how good they sound.

I like my Behringers. They're Good Enough for my ears.

ttoz, they're about $799 from Musician's Warehouse. Is there any place I can find them cheaper?

I've decided on these, I think they are the best overall from what I've been told by several people. The MSP3 aren't too bad, but these are supposedly better.

They have 'em on sale for $246 ea. If you're really into this stereo monitoring fad then it's $492.00 a pair. Plus free shipping. Which may or may not be free.

So did you end up getting anything? I just went to buy a pair of MA20D's, only to find that they don't make 'em anymore and that they have been repackaged as Roland DM20's for $100 more. So I ended up getting those for Au$400 a pair at Allan's Music in the City.
So I get 'em home, set 'em up and fire up the ol' PC. F U C K ME DEAD! WHAT IS THAT F U C K I N G NOISE! I don't think these things are shielded at all because I can hear my HDD, my modem and any other electronic device within 10m of 'em. But they sound pretty good and go really loud. If I can sort out this problem I'll be deaf in a month or two.

I hate the edirols, between those two monitors the behringers are likely better...

What about Yamaha MSP5A?

Although I didn't hear them for too long, from what I heard from them at a friend's studio, they seemed very good for the size.

Bob Clearmountain's main monitors in his mixing room are Yamaha NS10s - "I just know them so well that I can really be sure of what's going on with a mix when I use them," - augmented by self-powered KRK E7s - "those let me hear what's happening below 80Hz." He also employs a pair of compact Apple computer speakers. "Those are actually my favourites! I have them placed right next to each other at the side of the room on top of a rack. I don't like speakers that are too hi-fi for mixing, because if the speaker makes everything sound good, you don't work as hard and then the mix is not going to sound very good when you play it back on a lesser speaker.

Kinda puts the "Can't Mix Professionally on Cheap Speakers" theory to rest, no?

Mwahahaha, yeah it does. I remember reading another classic case of someone doing a stonkingly well known piece of music on pishy speakers but can't remember who it was etc...
