Take the Emulator X, remove its sampling feature and allow it to only load samples from Emu libraries... and you have the Proteus X. Then give it a sample converter so you can translate Gigastudio, Soundfont and Akai format samples to Proteus X format.

You could buy an xboard midi keyboard, which comes with Proteus LE. No PCI card required.

But your Laptop can "grok" the Emu 1616 which comes shipped with the Proteus-X http://www.emu.com/products/product.asp ... duct=13554

besides proteus sounds, it has a real fantastic piano sound that is excellent! I have a (hardware) MP7, which is more or less the same thing, but nice to see it as a VST as well.

I wouldn't recommend getting the 1616 yet, though. Knowing Emu, it'll work like crap for a year or two before it's actually usable.

I wouldn't recommend getting the 1616 yet, though. Knowing Emu, it'll work like crap for a year or two before it's actually usable.

The 1616 drivers work great right now. If you have EmulatorX you can even install it and run it right on your laptop. Provided your laptop is up to the job..

The 1616 drivers work great right now. If you have EmulatorX you can even install it and run it right on your laptop. Provided your laptop is up to the job..

Hi Ildon

What was the problem? I just got my new computer on Friday with a Proteus X installed and have noticed some crackling with the effects and also when using some VSTi's. Also have had some crashes with Guru which I am not sure may be caused by the Proteus as Guru works fine on my old computer with an Echo Mia Midi card. Will have to check what drivers are installed.

The new v1.81 drivers seem to work all right. However, I still can't get streaming to work in Proteus X. Every time I turn streaming on it just crashes. Otherwise fine.

Tip: you can get old ESI Formula 4000 CD-ROMs from Thomann for dirt cheap. The Proteus X file converter can turn them into PX sound banks in a flash.

The problems I experienced were audio-related. I'd get latency when I'd record, and I found out it was because of crap drivers for the Proteus. Your crackling problems are probably caused by your ASIO buffer latency being set too low. I have mine set to 50ms and it works great.

What speed is your hard drive? If it's below 7200RPM, that might explain why it crashes.
