Whats the diff between eXT and Audio Mulch?

Hi all

A long while ago, I was using (the demo version) of Audio mulch for stuff.

Then got EnergyXT, and it has the same kind of modular connections.

However now I see that AudioMulch is coming out of beta and when he releases ver1, it will go up in price, so he is encouraging to buy now and you get the update for free.

However , what is the diff between the two? ( besides eXTs's sequencer functions) Does eXT do the same thing as Audio Mulch, ... would it be worth getting Audio Mulch?? WHATS THE DIFF??

Post

the differences are that they are a world apart, neither is better than the other for they are so different that they are not even the same :o
too complicated really tim to explain cept to say that audiomulch comes with some fantastic modules and yes its worth at least trying the demo to see if it offers you anything,it is a very differnt beast :o

Think of XT as a Cubase killer.. then think of AudioMulch as a sound mangling beast.

Excluding MIDI sequencing, the big difference is that Mulch works much more like a sampling/synthesis environment than eXT does. It's like a modular synthesizer, since it has more lower-level building blocks than eXT. If you look at eXT's sampler comp, you'll see the difference straight away. EXT's sampler is a self-contained instrument and comprised of many parts, where as sample playback in Mulch employs more simple devices and is thoroughly intertwined with its overall function.

Mulch lends itself well to approaching music composition as dealing with audio streams and transformational processes more than the discrete arrangements you'd find in note-based compositions, which is probably why it's used more often by electroacoustics types than pop tunesmiths. It also works well as just a sound creator for use elsewhere, or as a DJ arranging device, and has some really great and fairly unique automation processes (its linear envelopes and the metasurface).

Hope that helps.

I also use both but not in the same way. Don't know what to add cuz everybody here pretty much described it quite good.

If you like to tweak it live, audiomulch is great for that. The automation is easily set-up and recorded and the ability to edit the controller curves and ranges makes it a plus. The metasurface is also quite a unique concept inside of mulch.

I'd say buy it before the price goes up cuz there are some goodies coming up for it like a new rhythm box.

Thanks for the input.

You can use Paypal to register mulch? When I registered mine, it was trough Kagi. Anyway If you have prob with it, you can always contact Ross directly. He's a very cool person and usually responds to e-mail if you have prob with the soft or any bugs.

Yeah..I got the audiomulch newsletter, and in it showed how to register with paypal.Theres a lot of users on the fractal music yahoo forum as well.

yup wish i could afford it now

It's not really my thing on the whole, but I have to say that Metasurface idea is brilliant and looks like it will get even better.

It's almost worth buying just for the Metasurface I think.

Happiness is the hidden behind the obvious.

Yes quite unique. In the help here's what it says for the future:

"The Metasurface is currently limited to controlling some parameters (for example it can't be used to switch soundfiles or patterns), this may be changed in the future. Future versions of the Metasurface will support MIDI control. "

Still a "this may change thingy" but it's quite interesting nonetheless.

I had collected a little list of his future improvements somewhere but I can't find it. I know that midi between contraptions is in the todo thing. Something I've been waiting for quite a while. For now though, Energy XT saves the day since I use it to record midi keyboards inside mulch or to program a rhythm.

Sorry for the late add.. Is it just me or are you ppl trying to downplay the power of eXT? As an oldschool mulch and xt user i gotta say that both products are about the same powerwise.. I've had successfull commercial releases created in audiomulch and let me tell you it was no easy job (not to diss it).. but there are things in xt that give an almost "natural" workflow when creating songs.. I've done some "dj style" production where im recording my midi and automation loop style and creating whole songs this way that sound as good if not better on the variation side than mulch. I found that mulch's weakness is that you kinda get stuck with one kind of sound and if you are automating more than 10 parameters good luck trying to keep that organized.. So before we just say yea yea mulch is this super powerfull tool I think you need to create a couple of songs using both systems then do a comparison.. Alls I know is that with the advent of more stable xt's in the last few releases I've noticed that arrangement has gone from tinkering to flowing...

Alls Iam saying.... is give xt a chance.....

Nope. Don't know where you got the idea but If we're talking about mulch, doesn't mean we're dissin XT.

Everybody here owns the 2 apps (almost). Go the XT forums and you'll see most of the guys in this thread over there. For me, in audiomulch, I mostly mangle audio and in XT I record jams or sequence things. Both allow powerful routing so it's all good to me.
