I want to make videos for my music. What are the best options for doing video on a computer? I want to be able to do a lot of complex things like having multiple videos on the screen and transparency and things like that.

Sony Movie Studio is cheap and does a good job.

Liquid Edition 6.1 might be a suggestion ,....

Just ebayed this one cheap, but it´s for the future, have
no time pt, but for the first time ever I got enough
PC-Power so it´s time to start up, be aware that a dual
Xeon above 3 Ghz, 2 G Ram, Raid, etc. (or simular)
is very helpfull

Video is much much more demanding than music

Do it the right way....use Adobe Premiere and After Effects. They support third-party plugins....quiet expensive but worth the investment

i use a combination of freeware. am i doing it the wrong way?

Multiquence is a good/cheap/basic option. You can mix multiple clips, overlay them, put them in little boxes etc. I tend to use virtualdub for adding effects then simply compile the finished video in multiquence

depends on what freeware you use. most of the freewares have poor rendering quality.

Try free products by Zwei-Stein, Bobyte and DebugMode. Try Ulead for reasonably priced products.

Vegas is far, far friendly than Premiere and superior in many ways. It also has some very powerful audio features. Basically if you know how to use Acid then you'll know how to use Vegas.

Another vote for Vegas, once you use it you won't look at another video editor...Ever.

With the new (since version 5) 3D space (and easily automatable) composition mode, the parentable tracks, easy to automate and visualize transparency using per track or PER CLIP enveloppe, color corrector and vector type cookie cutter, just to name a few, you can't go wrong (not to mention audio features which are still the best in a video editor).

Vegas gets my vote too. Premiere is a bit poo when it comes to just diving in and mucking around. Vegas basically lets you treat video as if it were an audio track - you can slice and splice, set markers, loop parts of video. You can have as many audio tracks as you need also, and you can have vst effects on those tracks.

Vegas is very comprehensive but it and its plugins may be too expensive if you don't need the features. Try the free, try the cheap, then you can decide if you need to move on.
