Hello, my Colleagues,
I seem to be a bit of a software slut lately and am getting crazed about drum sequencing and samples; I'm contemplating buying the academic version of FLStudio 5 XXL, which is a delightful $129 here --

Fortunately, I actually qualify for the purchase. You can't take advantage of this if you don't work for an educational institution.
I've hit the FruityLoops site and can find absolutely nothing about prices and policies on individual academic purchases, only a page about institutional buys.
Academic discounts for most music-related software aren't all that compelling, but this one would be an Extreme Deal if it includes the lifetime upgrade guarantee. Anybody here have any knowledge about that?
Take care,
GreyLion

Thanks, rbet! Exactly what I needed to know. I think I'll jump on this one, too, if I can squeeze out the money. Looks like FLStudio 6 is on the near horizon, and who knows how much the academic version might cost then?
That said, I wish they were a bit more forthcoming on their site. As far as I can tell, you can't get much info about the new features in FL6 (or much of anything else)unless you're already a registered user. Seems like a self-destructive marketing plan to me, but I assume they're being paranoid about giving away too much info to folks with cracked versions of the software.
Looks like the only difference between the Producer and the Producer XXL versions are some synths that I probably won't use, so I might go with the $79 Producer version.
Take care,
GreyLion

Hey, rbet,
Yeah, I was surfing their site again and may get sucked into that. The Sytrus alone sells for more than the difference in price, even taking the group buy (here: http://www.kvraudio.com/index.php?s=offers#news4126 ) into account. Thing is, I already have enough free synths and samplers, and there seem to be more high-quality ones coming out every day. I realize that I usually just fiddle with them briefly then move on to the next new thing.
From seeing some of the threads here, I know I'm not alone in that I end up monkeying with the hardware and software continually and obsessing about acquiring more and better stuff, rather than just sitting down and making - yes, and even finishing! - some music.
I'm a tech geeek from way back, and the constant change is soooo seductive. In the past 6 months, I'm making a determined effort to simplify my setup, have only about a dozen plug-ins in my Tracktion VST folder, actually am trying to learn how to use the software that I have.
And it's really difficult to do that. I suspect that you have to be obsessive to create. And, at least for me, technology hijacks my obsession to write and make music, and I end up focusing on the toys instead.
I am sooo not railing against the rapid pace of technological improvement in our field. I'm an anti-Luddite, if anything. But it sure exposes the flaws in my character. I sometimes wonder how many of us surf the boards so much and obsess about and endlessly discuss the details of our set-ups to the point that we don't make much music.....
That said, yeah, the Sytrus looks sweet and I want it.
Take care,
GreyLion

well, most of us are like that... obsessing over tools and failing to finish a sculpture... I am just going to buy FL Studio and a couple of VST synths and effects, no more. I'll see what I can whip up with those. I can't let this become an overly expensive hobby
