Why do you think so? Because you actually tried it or because of the name of the preset?arturmeinild wrote:Nice find, bduffy...That has got to be the closest approximation...

Ok here's some GCO-1 settings to try out against the example from the UA sight.
1176 Acoustic Guitar:
Threshold: -12.6
Gain: 4
Ratio: 12.5:1
Attack: .661
Release: 722.7
Envelope: Classic
Knee: 9.5
Everything else is at it's default state in both examples.
LA2A Bass:
Threshold: -14
Gain: 5.6
Ratio: 4:1
Attack: 9.550
Release: 3419 (yup that long)
Envelope Type: Opto
Time: 276.2
Release: 85.82
Lev: 66.00
Knee: 87%
Lin: 80.50
With those settings I got damn close to the LA2A slap bass example. Like everything with compression, you'll want to tweak some. Also, if you want to up it to LA2A limit territory increase the threashold to 12:1. If anyone tries it out, let me know what you think.

How do the bomb factory plug-ins compare to their uad-1 counterparts? My friend picked up m-powered and an AP 2496 and was thinking of getting the BF plugs.
They have the 1176, LA2A, LA3A, Pultec,.etc...

hey Funkybot, I have done a similar test and also noticed that the GCO1 could do very similar things to most analog units. I couldn't find a page however, with those attack / release times on the real LA2A and 1176 units. Can you please point me to your source ?
My vote is for the GCO btw, or the Sonalksis Compressor sounds very analogue too and I think that with short attack times, it could sound really similar to a 1176
I find the GCO the best allround compressor bar none. The main reason is the amount of control. For example, PDE is a feature which can really help drums because it prevents a lot of the typical analog pumping. If you want pumping, you can definitely get it though!
Turning off PDE gets you a lot closer to a less smooth analogue sound. Also please make sure you try all compression modes. Classic adds a tiny bit of distortion. Opto and Smooth 1 are my favourites for most tasks but if you want something to stand out in a mix, Classic works best.
Cheers

Here's some info on the 1176:
http://classes.berklee.edu/mpe/pdf_file ... 1176ln.pdf
This has some on the LA2A:
http://www.vintageloop.com/ua_LA-2A.html
Basically just do a google search for 1176 or LA2A Attack And Release or Knee and look through what comes up and you'll find the info.

thanx for all the suggestions people. The thing is, imho the ease of use of the 1176 is just as important as it's quality for me. It can very well be that a certain native compressor plugin can sound the same as the 1176 after setting it up for 15 minutes, but i would really prefer something that can be setup really easy and quickly and give quality results

Funkybot thanks a lot buddy.
Olaf, I think that if you setup the GCO correctly and create a preset, then the only thing you have to change each time is the threshold value which acts as Peak Reduction

Try this one.
I tried once how close i could get to the 1176 with Blockfish and was rather surpriced, positivly.

verstaerker you're totally right, there is no way a native VST can produce that 2nd sample. I tried with GCO1, Sonalksis, Blockfish and Crunchessor. The closest result was with GCO1 as I got some distortion started on the bass drum but the character was totally different. Also, what I find amazing is how the 1176 seems to keep the dynamic range and adding the character at the same time. All compressors I tried lost quite a bit of dynamic range and you could hear the volume brought up between the snare and bass drum.
Some folks have been praising Neodynamin, so maybe they'd like to try with that too ? But from my end, GCO is the closest you'll get but it's still nothing like the 1176. I guess the UAD-1 is unrivaled for the 1176 at least, and i'm sure there would be things we couldn't reproduce with the various vintage EQs and compressors that UAD1 also offers.
Cheers

thank u soundpalace - u're very right. The GCO comes very close to the first sample - but not to the second one. And one thing not to forget is that the 1176 is very easy to use.
2 Knobs(input/output) and 4 switches (compression ratio). But as i said - i still use my GCO a lot, when i need a diffrent sound
some other UAD plugs are also very unique (Fairchild
, Pulteq Eq, Dimension D (don't need it for my sound but is impressive), Plate140)

Funny, I don’t even like what the Uad does to the sound.
Too edgy and overemphasized, the way the lingering tones
stick out and almost border to metallic. Each his own.

Blue Tubes... Most poeple saying about the Blue Tubes thats this are crap. Many producers preferring T-Racks for tubelike sound and for homemastering.Mozzer wrote: I still say try Blue Tubes!!!

For my ears Blue Tubes are to subtle. I would go with T-Racks or some other good compressors which can sound more vintage-like.
