I have the Squier Tele Custom II (but in blond) and I like it a lot.

First off, it's great to play. Really. I love playing it.

Second - the sound is very good , too. Nice honking bridge pickup - mellow rounded neck pickup.

The bit that suffers (with it being a sub £200 guitar) is the intonation above the 12th fret. Not a major worry, really and only a minor problem.

Ive got a fender mexistrat I will sell ya- plays great though shipping to the uk may be pricey

I've always liked the quality of the Ibanez guitars, especially for the price, but I never liked the futuristic looks and somewhat metal audience. The last few years with the Artcore series, the Jet king, etc., they have some looks and sound that I can really appreciate and the same quality for price. They are also getting great reviews on all the online forumns. If I was out looking for a guitar in the $300 range, I would probably go with an Ibanez Artcore, although that Godin Radiator sure looks tasty and reminds me a little of a $2,500 guitar (Gretsch) that I've always wanted.

Id recommend trying out a pacifica if you can find one. I own an early yamaha RGX and for a 'cheapo' guitar you cant beat it.

Then again if youve got the cash a variax is probably worth looking into!

i second the ibanez artcore guitars...i've got an ibanez talsman which plays and sounds great, i've tried the artcore "335" style guitar, and i like it better than my epiphone sheraton (epi's 335 copy), the neck seems a bit straighter, the epi sounds good too,but i need to have some one adjust the truss trod, i've tried before on my old epi that got nicked, don't wanna ruin my new one...

as far as noise: make sure all your audio gear is grounded, leading to one single ground that is actually going to an earth ground...if the guitar is propoerly shielded, you should be good to go...a good guitar tech can fix up a poorly shielded ax, or you could do it yourself....

For the price, this guitar is a steal > flamed maple top, neck thro body, great action for just over £130

I've replaced the original pickups with a set of Fender Vintage noiseless pickups and this has made a very good guitar a great one. The new pickups only brought the price up by another £80, £230 is a great total price. I can highly recommend this guitar

we seem to have the same taste regarding guitars...

Re Ibanez: I also never enjoyed the metal image of Ibanez, in particular the sharp horns and hockey stick headstocks. The SZ I tried is as far in that direction I would go. Since this will be my only guitar for a while, I'm not really interested in an artcore, or any other semi-acoustic, although I'm sure they are excellent guitars.

Re Variax: Hmmm, maybe I'll try one actually, although I'm not sure about it. For that price it really needs to be nice to play, since I won't mainly be using it for recording. I believe I've heard some bad things about the cheapest model (300?), is there anyone here with first hand experience?

Ian B: Never heard of Harley Benton actually...but for that price it sure looks interesting. The impression I get from the reviews is that the sound is somewhat warmer than a tele, is that right? Would suit me well I think.

I bet you'd be surprised though how good they are for rock!
