I've actually seen mercury filled tubes used as speaker cable.

And live shows invariably have poor sound; audiences making noise, messing up the acoustics by their mere presence, and so forth.

I take issue with that word "invariably".. live mixes often sound a mess I grant you, but this is usually a combination of bad room acoustics, bad P.A, or bad musicians. However, if the band have their sound together, the equipment is up to scratch and the room isn't too bad, there is no reason why it shouldn't sound really great.

btw, audiences usually improve room acoustics

Back on topic: I bought a Whirlwind cable about 10 yrs ago, I've played loads of really barbaric gigs through it, and its still going strong

guess i should've given more details about my setup and intended uses...

currently playing an epiphone SG special with 2 humbuckers into a boss DS-1, rocktron pulse and guyatone md3, then into a Kustom KGA16R (for practice). for recording, i skip the amp and go straight into an M-Audio mobilepre and use software amp sims (particularly simulanalog's JCM-900).

don't play any gigs (yet?), just a serious hobbyist trying to offset the boredom induced by my dayjob.

If you have active gear in line from SG to amp/pre-amp...then your line(guitar),cable signal quality is of no concern to your sound or signal to noise ratio.

Making solid electrical connections at each connection point is your strongest concern.
1/4in phone plugs are inherently a bad connection design.
Using an electrical chemical "cleaner/lubricant" wiped onto the 1/4in phone plugs and inside your jack connections is the best way to ensure a solid connection.

You can also use a cable that uses a "braided" shield over a "serve shield"(just wrapped around the center conductor),in order to isolate radio injection from getting into the cable when the cable takes a hard bend which can separate the "serve" shield and open a path for the radio interference to get into the cable.Braid won`t separate.The more wires in the braid and how closely those wires are interwoven insures good isolation.

If you SG has "humbuckers",that increases 60cycle hum rejection.

I have a Planet Waves cable that has a circuit breaker switch in it. The cool thing I just found out though is that they have solderless plugs on them. All you have to do is take out the screw, cut off the bad part of the cable, insert it back into the plug and tighten the screw. Quite a time saver and it seems to work!
