When to Unit 7’s wake today. Everybody started crying when “Cries and Whispers” started playing. They knew that was 7’s favorite tune.
Unit 7 would have wanted it that way.
Fun reviews!

M4d pr0pz to Wopelka, mystahr, Barnadine, rachmiel and Scoops for having the guts to observe all this semi-dead stuff at close range.
@Barnadine: 1) Let me remind you you have to thank some people for their reviews
2) I can't get my cylinder folded into a sphere, can you give me a hint on how to do it?

Thanks and not a problem this go around.
When ya get right down to it though, I find it much more difficult to write the reviews than it is to actually come up with a comp for the month. To find a creative avenue to express how you feel about a persons work is quite tedious.
So when I see alot of people refraining from writting reviews, I can totally understand.

I wrote some reviews down, but they seemed to fall into two categories 1: Good background tune to a scary dream scene or 2: Good tune to scene where some poor souls get tortured.
So I'll listen to them all again at some point and be a little less lazy with my reviews.
Good effort from all who did review them as well. Cheers for not scathing down the total newbie

Hmm, lowest turn-out in a while. Intimidating theme? People still perfecting their masterpieces?
Beardedone - I know it makes you a bit grumpy, but I think you do some of your best stuff when nudged out of your Metheny comfort zone. Nicely understated mood of foreboding, not yet crystallised into a specific fear. The rolling bass rumbles give it an uneasy urgency.

Cheers, farlukar. And now I've got Scoops to add to that list. Too busy at the moment, but I'll get onto this when I can.farlukar wrote:@Barnadine: 1) Let me remind you you have to thank some people for their reviews
The diagrams should clear up any confusion. (Quick tip: sobriety can be a hindrance to success here. Try cheap liquor.)farlukar wrote:2) I can't get my cylinder folded into a sphere, can you give me a hint on how to do it?

I can't speak for anyone else, but I am having problems with this month's theme. I like to try and provide a track that closely meets the requirements of the theme, and this month, IMHO, this means not only using samples of previously submitted material, but also meeting the objective of being "spooky, creepy, ominous, scary, violent, or terrifying".Barnadine wrote:Hmm, lowest turn-out in a while. I have tried two approaches. The first was to try to create the sounds I hear in my head from samples of other material. This has failed - I am afraid I don't seem to have sufficient knowledge of sound design to achieve this. The second was to noodle around with samples of other material to try to create something spooky, creepy, ominous, scary, violent, or terrifying. At the moment, this isn't working to my satisfaction either. While I can create some individually terrifying sounds, I can't get them to meld together into a satisfying whole. (emdot_ambient, I admire your capability to put together a very satisfying track in the way you have, in the time that you did it - I don't seem to be able to achieve anywhere near the same quality of results)
I haven't given up - yet. But if you don't see a submission from me, you will know that I have not been able to arrive at anything remotely resembling a "masterpiece".
Time is an illusion - lunchtime doubly so.

Thanks so much mate! Actually I like this month's theme very much- I enjoy making scary and bizarre sounds. It is the technical nature of the material that I find cumbersome : I am a very poor at audio manipulation. Midi notes and VIs are some much easier to track for me - time and manipulate. Even comping with audio is using Live 5 I find is tedious. OK you're right....I am grumpy - I don't get enough sleep.

Well, honestly, at first I had the same problem you're having. I came up with some great sounds but couldn't get them to gel into a cohesive whole. It wasn't until I started arranging unmangled audio clips that things took shape. The strings and orchestral bits set the overall song template, the sax and guitar punctuations were also more or less untampered with except in the cutting and arranging. Only the underlying creepy sounds ended up being severe audio manipulation.slartibartfast wrote:...emdot_ambient, I admire your capability to put together a very satisfying track in the way you have, in the time that you did it...
But I'll take the compliment, thanks!

Can't speak for anybody else, but despite what I've said, I've tried it; loaded some samples from the graveyard into Vegas and realised 3 things:Barnadine wrote:Hmm, lowest turn-out in a while. Intimidating theme? People still perfecting their masterpieces?
- No matter what I've tried, it only sounded crappy (not creepy, that would have been acceptable I think).
- I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or where I was going with this (hence "a").
- I hated the whole process and had no fun at all doing it.

I don't know but I found that a judicious selection of filters (Camelspace, Nitro, Quadfrohmage and a multitap delay or two made all the difference between a composite of wierd sounds and a mashed up bizarro fest.
