Hi guys & gals,
Do you use any plugins for kicks in addition to compressors? Some guys told me that there are plugins to enhance kicks so it would give better weight. Whats your opinion about this?

most useful plugs for kicks are...
EQ
COMPRESSION
LIMITERS
DISTORTION
SUB HARMONIC ENHANCERS
Your friend was probably referring to sub harmonic enhancers which add weight by artificially adding a harmonic one octave below the fundamental frequency of the waveform you apply it to.
ie. if your kick has its strongest frequency at 120 hz the plugin will generate a harmonic one octave lower at 60 hz.
These plugs generally act psycho-acoustically and the effect is normally of more perceived low end rather than true floor shaking, intestine resonating ,leave you vomiting on the floor whilst filling your pants sub sonics.

Camel phat free, or the full camel phat. I've never EVER seen anything that could add punch to drums like that plug in. It is exceptional at this.

I'm going to join the chorus and say that camelphat instantly fixes the kick, like nothing else I've heard, hardware or software. Primarily I use it on a send, LP'd at somewhere between 80 and 110 hz, with no compression, just EQ tuned and a little dirt. Just a great piece of software, I think.
Grist for the glamour mill.

We have some kick drum specific presets in the new TrackPlug 5 for more conventional sorts of channel strip processing (EQ, compression, etc). And yes CamelPhat is quite good too.

You can also try to apply reverse reverb to the kick.
No enhancement, but good effect.
