why is your host better than tracktion?

I was gonna avoid fuelling this topical detour, but yeah, I wouldn't say British humour is subtle at all.

well, Red Dwarf isn't subtle. But then it's not comedy either.robenestobenz wrote:I was gonna avoid fuelling this topical detour, but yeah, I wouldn't say British humour is subtle at all.

Me too. That's one of many reasons why I still use Logic 5.5 on a PC. Will probably go for the latest version on a Mac eventually.ResonantOrder wrote:Simple. I need sysx capabilities because of my hardware.

off the top of my head, and unless they've been fixed in the all new tracktion update (don't have it yet):Quote:
there are things that sonar/cubase/etc. can do that tracktion can't
yes...and they are?
for sonar:
-- reverse single clips without reversing the whole waveform.
-- not almost crash every other time when i load groove agent
-- view and print your midi parts on a standard music notation staff
-- edit your midi events via an event list
-- view your project through a console mixer
-- the apparent lack of sysex receive or something as someone else mentioned (never tried, so i don't know)
-- edit the resultant audio file of a frozen track just as you would edit a normal audio file (a lack that for me makes tracktion's freeze pretty much useless)
-- show multiple envelopes on a single track
-- loop record midi parts
-- lock track height
-- bind keys to certain features that i use often
-- select a bunch of clips and adjust their respective fade ins/outs all together
at least, i don't THINK you can do any of these things in tracktion. i could be wrong cuz i haven't looked at the manual much. but i'm at least sure you can't do SOME of them.
this is not to set sonar or tracktion as better. i'm just answering your question based on my amateur use of the two programs.

Well, there's quite a bit of doohickeys on the big sequencers that aren't on the smaller hosts.
That doesn't mean that you can't do the same thing musically on both, just that there's some snazzy extras on the bigger ones.
My favourite to mention is extensive midi editing like logical selection and editing. The only smaller host that had this kind of functionality was Muzys (RIP).
Another is the ability to design interfaces between the sequencer and your hardware. Cubase has the instrument definition file etc...
Again Muzys had this capability.
Event List display and editing. Muzys again had this.
You might not want or need this kind of stuff in your host though.

Cuz it has a proper mixer, so I can mix different tracks quickly and the interface is not all cluttered with that crap at the bottom that you can't hide. Also, it just opens, I don't have to f**k about with a new edit. Plus I can route audio to another track and resample it. But Tracktion has it's uses too and is in some ways better than "my host". Tracktion is my #2 choice.

A supporting company for the product is one thing. I waited month for a reaction from Mackie to give some response whether some problems would be addressed or not.androidlove wrote:yes...and they are?there are things that sonar/cubase/etc. can do that tracktion can't
Mackie had no timetable for when T2 would arrive etc.
I went for Sonar and have not had a second of regrets. Just getting more impressed as I go along.
Some things I appreciated are:
Staff view - will give you at least a basic staff with chord and notes and lyrics. Has helped a lot when writing songs. Very clever approach where you easily select the tracks you want in this particular set, and there they are. You want the brass stuff separately, it's easy to do.
Also entering notes directly from fretboard makes it easier to get exactly what you play into staff - either as notes or tabs. Deciding key and chords can be tedious when you are not a educated musician.
Programming language - make it possible to do fixes of mainly midi tracks i various ways. If you record drums on many tracks you can fixup that it sounds as it should with a drummer with two arms, as an example. Overlapping notes on certain instrument removed. Just one thing. Many CAL programs are out there for certain common fixes you want to do.
I have not tried T2, but Sonar has a very elegant way of creating and using subbusses and sendgroups.
And the Sonar workspace allows to hide unwanted stuff very easily.
Just a few things that comes to mind.

Are you being serious with this thread? Or are you just trying to elicit another 'my host is better than your host' argument? Hasn't that already been done to death?androidlove wrote:i've been using tracktion for a while. i've found it to be very flexible. why would i want to switch hosts?
Perhaps a more productive approach to discovering the strengths/weaknesses of sequencers is to try them out...
Besides, if you already find Tracktion 'to be very flexible' and if its workflow suits your needs, why not just keep making music with it?

Well, I like my host better because I made it myself
Working on adding MIDI now.. almost done.

My pleasure! And thank you and many others out there for supporting my efforts since HammerHead and giving all that valuable feedback and stuff.androidlove wrote: @bramthank you for all you've done!
I'll probably be doing some freeware plugins once I've implemented all ideas I still have for Tunafish.

Many of us got Tracktion for free, too.Kriminal wrote:My host is better than Tractor, cos i know how it works, and it was free
My host is better than Tracktion because it is also an instrument. Well, the main host I use, I have many hosts, including Tracktion, and I'm convinced that my Tracktion is better than yours.
But that said, if you can make music in Tracktion as you'd like to, don't switch. It takes a lot of time to move from one sequencer to another and get up to the same degree of expertise you had with the old one. Only do it if you are missing something.
